You know, this shows the same thing as that study that imaged bacteria (by confocal microscope) within and around the mucosa and inside cells:
In the imaging study they found bacteria penetrating the mucus in the distal colon of 100% UC cases examined.
BUT they also found bacteria penetrating in the ilium in something like 75% or more - would have to look it up and more in Crohn's. Seems to me the ilium perhaps plays a really big role in mucus development in the colon - like a pre-warning system of bacteria coming down the pipeline type thing if that makes any sense to you. It is after all the last step before the colon.....
Just found that aspect intriguing - the high involvement of the ilium in both UC and Crohn's.
