New here, ischemic colitis diagnosed

Hi,
My husband, 52, has been diagnosed with IC. I could really use some direction on where to find recipes. He was released from Kaiser yesterday. This week he's on a "soft diet". I got that!
After cooking for 28 years, I need help on this new path. Thank you for any help you can offer.

There are lots of interesting threads on diet on this site. You can search at the top. Usually they want you on a BRAT, or low residue diet, probably what they meant by 'soft'. Easily digestible, simple carbs until the colon heals a bit. Not too much fiber, gassy or complex foods till the medicines kick in. Good luck.

Katmom. Thank you for replying. I'll look up the info you suggested. That said....is there a web site that has recipes for I.C. that I could use? Again, I have his diet of Soft Foods for Soft Foods this week handled.

There really is no diet plan for UC that works in the masses. One food helps one person and makes another worse. The trick is to find out what foods bother him and make him worse and eliminate those foods, which could be healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. Don't just assume that because a food is healthy or organic that it is going to help him. It could actually make him worse. It's all trial and error for every unique individual.

People are responding with UC advice. Ischemic colitis differs from ulcerative colitis and other bowel diseases. Your husband does not have any autoimmune reaction going on, so a lot of the nutritional angle on diet will not apply. Neither will any food allergy stuff. Same for gluten, lactose, ... etc.

(from Mayo Clinic site): Ischemic colitis occurs when blood flow to part of the large intestine (colon) is reduced due to narrowed or blocked blood vessels (arteries). The diminished blood flow provides insufficient oxygen for the cells in your digestive system. It can cause pain and can damage your colon.

I think they want him to have bowel rest, so th elow residue diet makes a lot of sense. That pretty much means low fiber. Broiled meats, low-fiber starchy vegetables. Over time, foods that are favorable for any underlying conditions (e.g., diabetes, cholesterol, whatever is restricting blood flow) would be recommended.

But many here will not have responses tailored to IC. This is mostly UC place.

Thank you! Yeah, this is a UC Forum. As far as I could see doesn't have a forum. I was hoping that others with IC might read this forum and respond. Oh we'll.....I'll keep looking....
