The fundamental basis of inflammatory bowel disease:
www.jci.org/articles/view/30587It's a little dated (2007) but a little back and forth between genetic vs. bacterial type thing. One thing that stands out is that it discusses mucosal and bacterial penetration into the tissues and mentions the 10,000 biopsy paper directly- this says it's negative. Or negative into the lamina propria. So just that the bacteria are found at the surface and on top of the epithelial barrier. Personally I don't believe this to be true though - or accurate. I think the author of this particular paper misread Swadinski's study as it's quite clear they stated intracellular. Same with the confocal microcopy paper.
One thing that's clear is one needs to clarify this. Will be interesting to hear back from Swidsinski directly. I'm going to write to the confocal microscopy study author to find out if they also meant intracellular - or the bacteria are intracellular.
What does intrigue me is the antigen aspect - leading back to what Gary says from time to time. So the allergic reaction type side of things.
EDIT: My only issue with a fundamental genetic defect is that we woke up one day with IBD, some of us leading perfectly normal, perfectly healthy lives and then wham!... So something all of a sudden triggered a massive inflammatory response.
