Hii everyone. I've been on prednisone for almost 3 months now i started with 60mg and now down to 5 mg daily however my GI suggested that i take 5 mg twice a week for next week and then stop it. Is this the right way to taper off prednisone. Usually its taper off like 2.5 for 1 week and then 1 mg for 1 week. And then stop it. I was just wondering if anyone had tapered it off like my GI doc suggested. Thanx

I haven't seen that schedule of tapering on here but I could be wrong. It seems like most do 5mg, then 2.5 and sometimes taper off after 2.5. Others do 1mg after the 2.5. Maybe give the GI a call to confirm that is the appropriate tapering schedule.

Every other day dosing is actually quite common and really a better way to taper at the end instead of taking it every day at lower doses. It helps the adrenal glands kick in better by going without for a day.

I just tapered from Predisone. I was at 40 mg on July 11th and had to do 5mg taper weekly. My GI just said to stop after I take 5mg for one week. If I had a problem after that then 2.5 for a week then off. I've been fine off of it.

Your own adrenal glands start function at 7mg. I agree with Gary-- this form of taper your doctor has you on will trick your adrenal glands into functioning properly again.

Again, remember 5mg isn't that high of a dose, so you should be fine.

There are so many ways to taper. At the end I usually do 5mg for a week then 2.5 for a week followed by 2.5 every other day for a week to end.
