Diagnosing Leaky gut conclusively

I am reading quite a bit on leaky gut and the literature varies from cell lines to murine models. The literature surrounding human beings does not come with diagnosing details. So here is the question, has anyone 'diagnosed' leaky gut pathologically?

From my reading, there are tests that can be implemented to diagnose leaky gut, one is lactulose-mannitol test. Second is, testing lipopolysaccharides in the blood. I know the first one is available for diagnostic purpose but I am not aware of the second one.

Those who have been though this kind of discussion with their gastroenterologist, would love to hear the diagnostic tests and the outcome, if any.

My GI uses Lactulose-manitol test you mention. I have never thought to ask him about pathology though. In thinking about it just now there is a few papers on this though:

There is one in particular the I remember but don't recall the title. OM might remember. It was on visual inspection of IBS and IBD - showing IBS containing the same "look" of the tissue as in IBD just on a very microscopic or (micro) scale. I'll think about it for a while tonight and see if I can remember and/or find it for you.

I can ask my GI when I see him next if you remind me, haha... but that won't be until Novemeber 2'nd. Crazy how close that actually is........ where did the summer go???

Not what I was looking for - but this would be spot-on to what you're looking for I would think. I'd LOVE to read the full paper if I could find it.

The one I am looking for is very much like the first one, but instead of confocal images of the results of food antigens, they compared the tissues of IBS and OBD and found barrier defects (leaky gut) present in all but worse with IBD.

Also I assume and believe "leaky gut" to be another term for IBS really... Or a descriptive term more so in relation to the intracellular junctions.

Hope they help or at least pint you in a direction!

At the very least searching "microscopic images of tight junction disruption in IBS or IBD" or related type terms would dig up a lot of images and studies

I became interested in this topic as my niece came down with and was eventually diagnosed with a terrible case of IBS-D. Except all her GI said was here's a prescription or Imodium. Take up to six per day if needed. End of story. Was brutal.
