Fatigue and joint pain

I am really struggling with fatigue and joint pain. My other UC symptoms are gone at the moment so I don't know what's up. How do I deal with the fatigue? All I want to do is sit on the couch or lay in bed, but I am a SAHM so that isn't possible. I feel like I am dragging all day long. My supplements are listed in my signature. I am taking B12 too but I don't see it listed below. Will edit my signature. Anything else I should try?

Then there is the joint pain. I am taking Tylenol but it doesn't really help. Its mostly my hips/pelvis bones that ache. It's painful to walk.

I have been using sulfazine as one of my IBD meds for almost 7 years now to address joint pain. Sulfazine is very effective. You should tell your GI that you are having joint pain and that you want to try sulfazine.

You should probably also have a rheumatologist. While 20% of people with IBD get joint pain, it's possible that your hips hurt for some other reason.

I was seeing a rheumatologist a year ago because I thought my symptoms might be pointing towards lupus. My ANA was positive, as well as other things, but he didn't think I had enough of a score for a diagnosis of lupus. Then, once I received my UC Diagnosis I didn't bother going back for a follow-up. I just made a new appointment today.

I'm glad to hear it Jean. The odds are that your hips are hurting because your bowel inflammation is active. My rheumy worked with me and my GI to get me into a solid remission. It took a while but I'm glad I had the rheumy on my team. My GI just wasn't getting it about the joint pain and how disruptive it was to my life. More than the bowel stuff, really.

I hope you feel better soon.

just curious kaz - how exactly did your rheumy work with your gi to address your uc induced pains ?

He called him on the phone, with me in his office, to reinforce the concept that it was the GI's job to get my IBD into remission and thus solve the joint problems. I loved that day.

My GI had heard my complaints for months and didn't really respond until I showed up one day for a regular visit with my hand red and swollen. He said something like "huh, that's pretty bad." I think I just rolled my eyes.

My 1st rheumy appt was just a couple of weeks after that if I remember right. He took a very detailed history and also about half my blood. It took a couple of visits to sort out what was likely the cause of my joint pain and that's when he called my GI. I'd been undertreating my IBD since the day I first got diagnosed and my rheumy plus my PCP were the ones who really pushed me to get my quality of life back.

that's awesome ! hope you made him a cake or sent her some flowers :-)

that seems to be what we have found over the years - for every doc that seems uninterested or clueless, there's another one that's a keeper !

shout out time : my son's gi doc, Dr. Ghassan T Wahbeh @ seattle childrens is one of those - he just gets it - he sees my son as a person and a whole body, not just a patient with a digestive tract - plus he's just the nicest, most caring guy you'd ever have the honor of meeting !
