I cured / got rid of my ulcerative colitis

I just wanted to post a short story that may help others improve if not get rid of there ulcerative colitis.
My name is Lewis and I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2011. Since being diagnosed I've had 4 flare ups (all major), 2 of which put me in hospital for 2 & 4 weeks. The last time I was in hospital I was 3 days away from having my bowels removed (it got that bad and no steroids were helping) but the doctors tried one last hope of a new and expensive drug! INFLIXIMAD, infliximab saved the day and they decided not to operate.... but one day eventually, assured me that they will need to. As a 24 year old man a colostomy bag is not the sort of thing you want to be having if not at any age. I was terrified.
Anyway
After getting better and having my two monthly dose of inflixmab my body decided to reject it and I was taken off the drug completely. There was no other drug strong enough to deal with UC. So....whilst I was still in remission they put me on humeria (a drug for chrones disease) in the hope it will work and stop any inflammation from returning to my bowels. A year on and that failed....it may have not even been working from the start anyway.....the doctors never checked......what do they really care??!!
This time I really panik! I'm 25 years old, I have a flare up again which is turning more severe by the day and there is no drugs left in the medical world to stop me from having my bowels removed. I heard that smoking helps (something in the nicotine) but it didn't. I was worried. Really worried. I went to an allergy clinic out of desperation to find something. Maybe something I'm eating?? They tested me for everything. And everything came back fine....other than WHEAT!

I cut wheat out my diet completely and within 3 weeks my usual awful symptoms of bleeding, abdominal cramping and diarrhoea slowly disapear. I was overwhelmed with the fact I know longer have to worry about the dreaded day I am soon to have a bag or the fact I have to take asacol tablets 3 times a day plus an injection of humeria every week. I'm not saying wheat is the culprit for ulcerative colitis but it's definitely down to the individual's body being allergic to something in the gut that we are eating.

Yeah, honestly, if it was that simple for everyone, don't you think this forum would be a ghost town? Many people have been on way stricter diets than you and seen no joy.

Probably just had coeliac disease all along.

I agree with the others that you probably just had celiac disease all along and not UC. I don't want to be disrespectful but your post shows that you actually know very little about the disease. Many of the things you said aren't really true. I'm not saying you're lying but it shows that you are not up to speed on the disease. I always find it fascinating that we have people like you from time to time who never once found or posted on this website during all of their trials and tribulations with the disease and then all of a sudden they are cured and want to share it with the world with their first post. You don't appear to have visited here much at all because if you had you would have already known that hundreds of people have tried wheat free and it did nothing for their condition. Every once in a while it helps someone and I'm glad it worked for you.

Did they test you for celiac disease? Because it sounds like that's what it was more than UC. I cut just about everything out of my diet at one point so for me (and most other people with UC) diet had squat to do with it.

so what exactly are you afraid of gar ? something scary about what this guy has to share ? you think there is some kind of subliminal sales pitch going on ?

Celiac damages the upper GI tract, not the colon, so it seems like calling his condition celiac alone is not correct.

My personal history lines up pretty well with Jardine's, but I'm not calling myself cured by a long shot. I still get bowel weirdness and the occasional joint pain and I am unwilling to go med free. Best of luck to our OP.

sure, you say that now chrissy - but what would your answer be if the poop man plopped down a pan of his world renowned, fresh out of the oven homemade cinnamon rolls, on the table in front of you tomorrow morning ?

I'm not gluten intolerant. Neither do I have celiac. I know I had UC due to many cameras up the arse showing me severe ulcers that were ready to put a whole in my colon. I'm on here trying to help and share my experience. U think I have no clue about uc u are wrong. It was my life for 4 years. I never said wheat free was the answer. I just said it was for me. And that UC may b an allergy which is different in everyone. Read better next time before u rant and give the allergy clinic a go rather than sitting there ranting at me because all u believe in is the doctors word. Doctors don't always know best.

I find this quite interesting,need to read it again to digest it.

Perhaps all UC is not what we think of as UC in the traditional sense. To bad, I have gone wheat free with no effect,

SCD a few times, no effect,but it tends to help many.

But perhaps that is not enough for some people,especially might be true if people do not do well on normal meds,which might provide the clue that you have an allergic disease in the gut,where mesalazine and pred are not working well.

Jardine: You did well,and thanks for posting,gives me a different direction to look into.

Believe I researched quite a bit back when the SCD first came out,time to revisit.

I also may have tried Cetirizine in the past.

What kind of allergy clinic did you go to? Is this like a igG test etc?

Yeah, cured is a four-lettered word around here and like other expletives it is taken pretty much the same way. Had you left that word out, I am sure the tone of the replies would been much different. Welcome to the forum, and sorry for your less than warm reception. I'm glad you found something that works for. This is a very individual disease, what works for one may not work for others.

Happy that you have found some relief. I'd be careful with the word cured. What you think is cured may only be remission. What makes you believe you won't flare again if you truly have UC? Time will tell, but enjoy your remission. Also, you said you don't have Celiac, but you tested allergic to wheat. That's pretty much what celiac disease is.
