Ate peanuts... Now not pooping for three days and countig

So, I (stupidly) ate some peanuts. Now it's been three days and counting since I've pooped. I'm getting really worried... How do you know if you have a blockage??

My mom had had one before and was in pain and vomiting bile.

I would start to worry if I didn't go for three days. Have you tried anything like drinking coffee? I had a day this summer when I didn't go and drank a giant cup of coffee the next morning and it worked. My grandmother used to get small bowel obstructions from CD and she would vomit profusely when that happened. I would up my water intake if I were you, even if you think you are already drinking enough. Good luck!!

Thanks guys. I'm not having a lot of pain and I'm not throwing up. I've tried coffee with no success, think I will try some fruit juice and lots of water, fruit juice usually gives me near instant diarrhea, and loud gurgling cramps, but at this point it may be warranted as I'm sure I need to poop!

Just an FYI; having no BMs for a long time is a sign of toxic megacolon. Thats not the only possible diagnosis, but keep it in mind and def get it checked out

I bet the first day was "Oh boy this is great" and then after 48 hours you started to worry.
Before UC 3 days was normal for me but I think constipation was my normal state.
For me with UC now the fiber in nuts definitely causes a slowdown and I have gone 2+ days with no BM.

There are several ways to relieve constipation but you'll have to find what works for you.
Think about preps for colonoscopy (Miralax and other oral preps and maybe the enema prep) they should work if lesser measures (like water or spoonfuls of oil) don't.

Cut back on other fiber in your diet, that would not be helping right now.Good luck.

Prune juice always does the trick for me, way better than any over the counter stuff, faster and safer too...best of luck...I always say if I had to choose one over the other, I would choose D cuz at least you get the relief of having stool come out, being constipated IMO is so much more painful and scary cuz like with D you never know when it will hit or how painful or even successful it will be to empty out.

I had three poops today. I can still feel I'm backed up a little and I'm sure I will have a few more poops until things feel kinda normal again.

Got me thinking though...if a serving of peanuts backs me up like that....maybe a quarter serving would back me up just enough to poop like a normal person?!?, or, and this is more likely, it was just a fluke and not the nuts at all eyes

I would be worried about it if it lasted for a long time. I had one that lasted for 11 days. Yes, eleven. No toxic megacolon at all. Some people can just have really bad constipation (either from IBD inflammation or IBS). Thank god I'm over that period.

Last week I had an episode of constipation (first time since before I had UC!) After two days of nothing and then little dry turds, I gently increased my fiber. Ate celery and raw carrots as a snack, ate a small serving of beans three days in a row. Finally I had a large (think Mount Everest) BM and back to normal. It was an uncomfortable experience and really different for me.

Don't induce a bowel obstruction to try to slow down your BMs. As you can see, you'll end up constipated for a few days and then have many BMs when it resolves. That's when things go well -- when they don't, you can perforate, develop toxic megacolon, or remain blocked for long enough to develop bad pain and vomiting.

Good grief, do you know how ill you are with toxic megacolon? Constipation absolutely is not a sign of toxic megacolon: don't give out bad info. If you are not running a high fever and feeling iller than you have ever felt in your life, you don't have toxic megacolon, which, as the name implies, is toxic. And rare. And which constipation doesn't cause, unless you are already systemically, seriously ill with toxic colitis - only then might slowing the bowels down lead to developing a megacolon.

But the vast majority need never give it any thought. That's why docs don't forbid IBDers to take narcotic painkillers or imodium as a general rule.

My GI does not permit her patients to take opiates or Imodium. Throughout all of my hospital stays I was never allowed any painkillers except for Tylenol until after my colectomy.

Toxic megacolon is not very common but if someone with actively flaring UC has been constipated for days, they should know the symptoms and be on the lookout for the onset (e.g. rising fever). Whether it's TMC or "only" a bowel obstruction, both are serious.

Hee hee hee, you guys are funny. I agree, MEGA colon sounds like MEGA death to me tongue well, today continued my MEGA poops from being bunged up, lol.

Side note: if I ever die of toxic mega colon, I want it listed in my obituary. Lol. After a long battle with her mega colon, toomuchpoopin passed gently in to the next world, surrounded by her close friends- toilet paper, moist wipes and many enemas- in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the crappy colons foundation.

Ha ha @soystud - "TMC panic team" is about right. Btw, I owe you an email. Tomorrow, my chum, tomorrow... <_<. It's been a grisly week overall and it's not going to be any less grisly tomorrow. Have an appointment with the housing officer; it's going to be depressing and I really don't want to go. He's suggesting I go down the homelessness route, but now I'm getting way off track...

@Pluot - Well, in that case your GI is basically making up her own rules. Which is fair enough, but it does make it sound like she can't make distinctions or else she is very aware of the possibility of being sued.

@toomuchpoopin - Nah, it's not in poor taste to me. Toxic megacolon is a great name: it should be publicised :p

PS: My hospital pumped me with morphine every time I was admitted. I had known Crohn's pancolitis and my inflammatory markers were sky-high plus I was running a fever every time I was admitted into hospital. Outside of hospital I was cheerfully given prescriptions for codeine or tramadol. I'm sure I'd have been given Imodium if I'd asked... rolleyes

Couldn't agree more, everyone around here seems to be sitting on the edge of their seat waiting to shout out their "pretend-science", OH this will increase your cancer risk, this will trigger a flare , toxic mega farts...

I feel your pain and am sorry of the issues you are dealing with. Luckily peanuts do not seem to bother me. Nuts however do (peanuts are legumes not nuts).

Hang in there things will get better.
