It sounds like you'll arrive on Fri 11/28, the day after Thanksgiving. Traditionally, that is the start of busy Christmas shopping season-- called "Black Friday"! Traffic will be especially heavy & major stores will be crowded all day with shoppers trying to take advantage of special sales. Most stores will stay open 'til 9 PM, though, and the crowds thin a bit after 6 PM. RE typical neighborhood diner: there is one called Metro Diner at Broadway/West 100th Street corner. You would see nearly 100% local residents there, not tourists! It has the typical diner decor with booth-type seating & is spacious by Manhattan standards. This area is just south of Columbia University, whose neighborhood has a diner, Tom's Restaurant, at Broadway/West 113th Street. It also has booth-seating, but is more crowded with a mix of students, locals, & some tourists who know about it from a TV comedy called "Seinfeld." To reach this area fairly quickly from Wellington Hotel, you can take the Broadway/7th Avenue local subway (no. 1 line) that stops at 59th Street-- usually 15-20 minutes to W. 103rd St. or W. 110th, W. 116th Street stops. There are also many small shops & ethnic restaurants in the W. 72nd Street-W. 116th Street boundaries along Broadway, which also has a popular local bus, no. 104. If you want to spend time on West 34th St. (Empire State Bldg., Macy's huge famous dept. store + many shoe & clothing shops) there is a traditional NY deli called Second Avenue Deli on East 33rd Street-- you can look up their Website & see the menu. They cook traditional food from the Jewish immigrant community that used to live farther downtown, such as chicken soup with matzo ball & noodles, & huge sandwiches, also hot main courses. Then there is the famous Oyster Bar Restaurant located inside Grand Central Station on E. 42nd St.; you can also look up their menu/Website. It's a bustling place with both counter-seating & tables, but they are closed on Sundays. Finding public restrooms can be a nuisance so I'll tell you about that separately! / Old Hat (34 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
