OT - Hand dryers can spread bacteria in public toilets, research finds

"Modern hand dryers are much worse than paper towels when it comes to spreading germs, according to new research. Airborne germ counts were 27 times higher around jet air dryers in comparison with the air around paper towel dispensers."

Perhaps something else for those on immune suppressants to stay away from... I can only imagine the effect with say the flu virus during season.

This info's been out since the mid '80s, I haven't used one since.

It's good it's being brought to light once again. The first info was based on the air bring brought up from the bathroom into the dryer and onto the hands, but it brings up other points of gross and dirty interest.

Same here Quincy - always awkward though if you meet someone who wants to shake your hand after you come out of the bathroom and your hands are still wet!

yup, never liked the blow driers - but lots of places that's the only choice - for me, it's drip dry, the least amount of fingers needed to get the door, and the carharts in an emergency !

ah....got it. Carhartt pants...? Never hoid of them before.
I use toilet paper carefully taken from the roll and open the door with it afterwards. If no garbage can nearby, it then ends up on the floor next to the door.

Now that's something that I don't pay attention to in the past, opening public bathroom doors with my bare hands. I hope using hand sanitizer after leaving the bathroom helped though.

in the same way, air condition and mechanical ventilation may cause legionnaire's disease. I never turn on air con even when i'm on vacation in a tropical country

What's a jet dryer? Is that the days on type that your hands go down into vs under the warm air? I always try to use paper towels when there is an option and I use a paper towel to open the door too.

I've been seeing these a lot lately

I believe a "jet dryer" is just a term used by some for regular old hand dryers that blow air. Dyson call there's a blade dryer or something. Does not matter, as they are all just blowing air fast one way or another.

From personal experience I think the Dyson one's would be the worst cause the airstream deflects right up at you when you put your hands in it.

Uggg... this is going to take my germafobia to a whole new level! haha.. I won't be able to walk into a washroom or stand near someone when their using it! ugggg..

Leaf blowers also spread airborne disease so close your windows and go inside if your neighbor is using one. They are one of the stupidest machines ever invented. I have watched landscape crews blow one side of the street and come back to blow it back to the original side, but geezers in gated communities love to watch people work for them.

Seriously, I did research on it a couple years ago and all kinds of nasty ground level stuff gets airborne including dried pet feces, bacteria, fungus, and all types of allergic crap.

But makes sense.

It's an ongoing info searching process.

Those with keurig or tassimo machines...clean them regularly!

never ends...sigh.

I bet those dyson ones are really dirty too because when you put your hand into the blade system, often they blow around and hit the walls. gross. That means everyone's nasty bacteria is all over the inside of that machine.

Surprised I haven't got Ebola yet, with all the hand dryers I've used, opening of public toilet doors with my bare hands, etc. I'm sure I'll catch a deadly infectious disease one of these days - bound to happen.
