Biologic therapy seems like an ineffective long term plan for how much cost and hype goes into them. From the data and anecdotes I've read, the idea is that you're supposed to take these drugs to maintain remission for life, but it seems like most people get a few months or years before they inevitably fail them or build up antibodies. I know Judy has had 8 years on Remicade, which is amazing and I hope it continues indefinitely, but how often do you hear that?
Then I suppose nobody should take lialda, apriso or asacol hd either? I mean look at these lousy numbers:Apriso® 1.5g daily was compared to placebo over a 6 month period4. Remission rates at the end of the study were 79% in the Apriso® group and 58% in placebo (P<0.001).
I wasn't saying nobody should take the drugs, I'm just saying that it seems like lots of people fail biologics pretty quickly when the intent is that you should be on them for life to maintain remission. They're super expensive drugs and a lot of hype rides on them for relatively lackluster results.
AZYooper: I know that was probably for Solomon, but thanks for that info, I never considered differences in drugs' abilities to induce remission vs. maintaining it. I'll keep that info in mind when interpreting study results.
