I have been on 40 mg. prednisone now for 3 days and was wondering when i might see results with the blood. I am on a tapering schedule of 7 days of 40 mg. 7 days of 30 mg. 7 days of 20 mg. and 7 days of 10 mg. I still have the urgency and feel as if I am somewhat constipated. I have not had any diarrhea with this flare just bleeding. I don't want to jump the gun and call doctor too soon on this one. I am using psyllium seed powder 1 teaspoon in the evening, vsl #3 ds, and of course colazal 9 pills a day.

Too fast tapering.

I will suggest you to stay on 40mg until the blood disappears from your BMs. Once its gone, stay for one or two more weeks (use your 'gut feeling') and then taper it to 35mg, stay for one or two weeks and then taper to 30mg. Thus, taper with every 5mg. After 20mg, go even slower, and even more slower at and below 10mg.

Do NOT use psyllium seed powder until you get off Prednisone. Your gut linings are still fragile and using psyllium seed powder will irritate them. Take butyrate capsules and/or Miyarisan 3X a day. Add 5-10gm of glutamine in the regimen.

Offnote, I don't know why you are using calcium, but if you are post-menopausal and have osteopenia/osteoporosis, remove calcium and introduce Magnesium and rather high dose of Vit K along with Vit D. Majority of us get enough calcium from the food that we eat. We need Mg and Vit K to direct it to the bones (else you will end of up with atherosclerosis over the period of time).

how much magnesium do you think I should take instead of calcium supplements as i thought it was a good idea to take calcium while on prednisone anyway. Thanks for your suggestions. I am taking the fiber because i feel as if I am somewhat constipated.

Yes, a 5mg per week taper is more than enough. You may even want to push it to every 2 weeks when you're down near the 10 mg dosage. Give the 40mg some time to do what you need it to do, then taper.

If you feel constipated then Magnesium citrate is best. It will not only provide you with needed magnesium but overall the salt will help you with constipation.

I get constipated as a side effect of Verapamil, that I take for migraine prphylaxis. Magnesium citrate helps me immensely.

Everyone's tolerance limit is different so I would suggest you to get Mg Citrate tablets from Vitamin Shoppe (cleanest that I know) and start with one tablet once a day. Increase it to twice and then to 3 times over the period of 3 weeks. During this period, try to figure out if its helping with your constipation. If your tolerance dose is less then you may end up with loose stools of diarrhea at a certain dose. Reduce it in that case. Ideally, you should supplement 2/3 of a tolerance dose, in divided doses. Mine is 800mg, I take 200mg 3X a day.

If you have any history of cardiac issues, then consult a physician before starting it. Rarely, high magnesium supplement interferes with cardiac issues.

For high Vit. K dose, SuperK is the only preparation in the market.

Yeah, stay OFF the fiber - you're causing damage.
Bytyrate gives me so much gass so I had to stop it.
I'm also tapering off pred now from 40mg to 20 - I know I'm crazy but that thing is racking havoc in me. if it don't work out I'll be going back up :(
I'm hoping Apriso will carry the slack now

Please give your reasoning behind 'high' calcium dosing during Prednisone.
