6MP and TPMT Enzyme

I was wondering how many of you who have or had taken 6mp did the TPMT enzyme testing prior to taking this medication. I was reading that one should get this test done prior to taking providing the test is available to them. There is a 1 in 300 chance that I may be deficient in this enzyme which is required to metabolize this drug.

I am sure my GI will monitor everything closely one I start taking this as he stated already but he did not mention this enzyme testing to me as of yet. I will bring it up to him when I call him today.

I had this tested before I was started on azathioprine and it came back that I would be fine on the drug and would metabolize it well. Well that was wrong as after three months of taking Imuran, it turns out I was not metabolizing it correctly and needed to take allopurinol with it (another drug that would help me use the drug effectively so I got in to therapeutic levels). After six weeks on the combo, I am now finally in to the therapeutic level with the drug.

I had it done back in 2010 before I started on 6mp. I was at the low end of the middle range for metabolizing. For that reason I was only put on 50 mg and would have been at a higher dose if my TPMT test had shown me more in the therapeutic range.
