Hi Gary,
I had read your previous post and you had mentioned that GSE had helped you a lot. In ur posts you had mentioned that your bacteriodetes is very less. Did you take a recent ubiome or american gut results after you started GSE and did you bacteriodetes level increase. I recently got my ubiome results for my daughter. She has hardly any Bacteroidetes and high Proteobacteria
Firmicutes 78%
Proteobacteria 14.5%
Actinobacteria 7.33%
Bacteroidetes 0.105%
I'm now wondering if this is the reason for her frequent flare. Nothing so far has worked for her.

Sorry didn't see this earlier. Thanks for the bump or I would have missed it totally. Grape seed extract has indeed helped me as it supposedly decreases firmicutes and raises bacteriodetes. I have been much, much better in 2014 due to this, no question. But, I have never tested again since the original test. I would like to do that again but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Did you have high proteobacteria too? Can I stop a flare with just GSE given that I have practically no bacteriodetes?

i would just give it a go and find out - but even if it worked for my buddy gar, doesn't mean it will work for you -
it would be awesome if it did help tho !
but gar really needs to put this theory to rest by either having his gut critters tested again or going off this stuff for a bit to see what happens -
until then, it could be any 1 of a 100 things that has made the improvement -

Thanks to Gary posting about
grape seed extract, I tried it and have seen good results. It worked to get my stool formed.
Try it. There's no down side (researched it and couldn't find any risks) and if it had a negative effect, stopping should fix it immediately.
I started with one a day at breakfast and went to two a day - with breakfast and dinner - after a month.
Be sure to take it with food. Once I didn't and was horribly nauseous for an hour.

No protobacteria. Had about
98% firmicutes, 2% baceriodetes.

kiptyn and I take 400mgs Olympian Labs. It is available online at several different places. In my case, and I believe Kiptyn's also, we had testing done and found out that we had way more Firmiuctes than Bacteriodetes in our colon and the grape seed extract helps even out the ratios, making us better. If that is not your problem in the first place then it is unlikely that grape seed extract will do anything for you. Make sure you do not get grapefruit seed extract as it is totally different.

If I'm honest I do not know what any of that means Gary. You have obviously researched UC and have a much better understanding than me, as do a lot of people on here. Which is great for people like me who are still in the early stages and are still trying to figure what works for them.
Many thanks

I had a fictitious question. We are planning to do FMT next week. Will FMT change this ratio and make it normal?

Personally it is my belief that uc is complicated and just merely trying to restore your gut balance is not going to work long term. Our immune systems have been reprogrammed to destroy something in our colons, giving us uc. That's why our microbia are out of balance in the first place. If you don't address that issue the same thing will happen all over again.

My daughter was tested for C Diff at least 10 times before and she had come negative. However last month for the 1st time she came positive on C Diff. She was given vancomycin and immediately her flare stopped. However after 20 days her flare has started again. Our GI tested her again for C Diff after vancomycin and it has come negative.
