hi I am 21 years old and was diagnosed with uc abour 4 months ago just after having a baby and hospitalised for about 3 weeks. I am now out of the flare up and my GI has said that he wants me to go on Azathioprine again (I have been on it for a few months on and off now as my white blood cell count keeps going under the levels, been on 75mg, 100mg, 125mg, 100mg, 75mg already) he wants me to go onto 50mg now and try that. Understandably I am frustrated with the I.S. use as it seems more trouble than it has been worth so far as i was also still on prednisone steriods when i first started the I.S. treatment so surely it could have been those getting me out of the flare up? I have had a fungal infec. in my foot, a verrucca and colds since i have been on these and it just worries me how easy it is to get sick on them aswell as all these other minor ailments.
what does anyone suggest/ what have your dealings been like on this drug?
I also have been told by my GI that i can eat anything I want now. I'm very hesitant of this and confused. I thought you were meant to be on a low fibre diet, restricted amounts of fruit/veg especially with skins etc and then things like seeds and nuts etc were hard to digest and aggravated symptoms. What advice does anyone have there?
he was saying he thinks i may have IBS also and was saying to avoid gluten. This would be very hard as so far ive replaced fruit and veg intake with carbs like white bread (lower fibre than brown that i used to eat before UC diagnosis) he was even suggesting to eat the seeded breads if i must eat any confusing me over the seed issue even more.
I cant much afford to be ill with a 4 month old baby relying on me so any advice will be taken seriously!
Currently only on:
-asacol 5mg (12 tablets daily)
-2 probiotic tablets (self medicated)
-Forceval vitamin tablet
when my bloods are at a normal level again
-50mg azathioprine

How are your symptoms? If you're trying to figure out what type of diet works for you, you could try something like SCD Diet and add things gradually to see how you do. It's really hard to find what works for each individual. For me, I haven't noticed too many foods really giving me trouble besides spicy foods, gassy foods and artificial sweeteners. 50mg of aza is a really low dose. Have you tried any rectal medications?

I think you meant prednisone 5mgs X 12. Do you take Asacol?

Im still going to the toilet around 1-2 times a day for loose stools and big. Sometimes with stomach cramps but not like when i was in a flare up. Whats the scd diet? Its just so hard to pinpoint exactly whats making you go to the toilet when youre always going to the toilet, you know? I mean how long after eating something do you know that thats whats made you go? Ive been on asacol supp. Befoe and a mesalsamine foam spray but they told me tk stop as i was out of the flare up

When I am flaring I swear the second I put something in my mouth, it is ready to come out the other end. I am sure it's not the case but it sure feels that way. I would think you would have to do a real elimination of certain items and introduce things very slowly in order to figure out whether any of it had any impact on you. SCD diet is specific carbohydrate diet. There is basically a legal and illegal list. No grains or sugars are permitted. It's very restricting, and to be honest, I haven't seen too much success with it but I would try it myself if I hadn't already. I think you should continue using the rectal medicines for maintenance if they were helping you. Also, if you're only going once or twice, that's pretty good!!

Look at Fodmaps as well it helps determine what bothers you. Look it up. Good luck

Yes it is hard to remove bread/pasta/desserts and gluten based foods from our diets because so many meals include them (especially holidays food OMG). It can be done but takes some sitting down and making a meal plan that centers on low-fiber veggies and protein (meat/fish/cheese). It requires a change of how you think and cook.
Do a 30 day test and remove all gluten, if you see symptoms get better then keep it up. If nothing much happens then gluten is likely not your problem.
I have found that low fiber is appreciated by my gut, you'll have to see if it makes a difference in yours.Having 1-2 BM's a day is not terrible but if you have bleeding then get and use mesalamine enemas (nit suppositories) to make than subside.
If you notice your gut reacts (BM, urgency, bloating) after eating you'll need to keep a list of everything you eat so you can detect a pattern and figure out which foods are the problem. That is IBS-related but can also lower UC symptoms. Some foods react fairly quickly (for me chocolate, caffeine, fruit, sugar) and others much more slowly (bread, popcorn, nuts). It takes a lot of time to figure things out.
Don't rely on a doctor for food decisions, your gut will tell you what it hates but can be a little mysterious about which food. SCD, FODMAPS and other diets may help you get started but for me no specific diet found all my problem foods, in the end I listened to my gut.
I can't help with your choice of meds, most meds didn't work for me until I removed problem foods. It takes trial and error to find the Rx that works with few side effects. Good luck.
