the outer limit for tamiflu effectiveness is 48 hours after onset of illness.
From WebMD: "Tamiflu can decrease the duration of illness by 30% to 40%, and decrease flu severity by about
40% -- but only if taken in the first 36 to 48 hours of illness."

On the 3rd day she developed a mild fever and was sent home from school. We took her to her pediatrician, who swabbed her nose for influenza. She tested positive. A couple of hours later we picked up Tamiflu from the pharmacy and she started the medication. Two days later she was completely fine, without even a cough.
My daughter had the flu vaccine in September. This year's vaccine is not very effective, but might have also contributed to her very mild case.
