Hey everyone, just wondering. I've been on 1000g mesalamine suppositories for just over 60 days now and I'm wondering how long I should be taking them? My symptoms are much better than before (bouts of mucus and some blood on the paper) never had diarrhea or pain. When do I stop? And is it safe to take suppositories rectally every day for over 60 days?

They are your ulcerative colitis maintenance medication, you take them indefinitely. They are perfectly safe to take long-term, basically just an anti-inflammatory medication. It's well tolerated by most everyone with very few side effects.

Uc is caused by your immune system, and there is no cure. If you stop your medications then your inflammation would return along with your uc symptoms.

Is 1000mg daily normal? Can I lower it to 500g every other day or something? How do I go about this? I'm getting tired of wet farts that leak every morning.

I wouldn't recommend lowering your prescription dosage without, first consulting you gastroenterologist specialist.

Taking your medication is your insurance policy that you will remain without uc symptoms for as long as possible. Those who don't, are more prone to having a uc flare up (i.,e., a return of uc symptoms).

This disease sucks, and I can understand your frustration with wet farts. However, a uc flare up is by far worse.

Yes, 1000mg daily is normal. I have been using them for maintenance daily since 2006. If I even attempt to skip then I immediately start to slip into a flare. Some are able to do them every other day. I'm not one of those people. You can try once you are in remission to do every other day and see how it goes. The leaking is annoying, but I find if I do the suppository right before I go to bed and then have my bowel movement first thing in the a.m. then the leaking is a non-issue. Leaking is only an issue if you either do the suppository in the morning or do it before you go to bed and don't expel it in the morning with a bowel movement. And as annoying as the suppository is, it is nothing compared to a full blown flare.

Ditto the above. If I were the doctor I would also have you on an oral mesalamine indefinetly as well because proctitus often spreads farther up and this would help cut that off at the pass. It's easier to keep it at bay than to wait for it to get worse and then have to treat an already damaged colon.

60 days does seem too soon the lower dosage. some people do use rectal meds less frequently when in remission. some continue daily. you need to see how you get along.
