My son's having a bad flare - now on 40mg of pred. (should I get him gastro-resistant as been given normal tablets?) Stomach cramps are nasty -make him feel like he needs the loo all the time. Any advice on how to deal with them? Using a hot water bottle. Mebeverine doesn't help and paracetamol doesn't do much either. Thanks.

The doctor could prescribe some Tramadol or Hyoscyamine. I never tried Mebeverine though so I don't know how strong it is compared to the others. Generally it's though to treat the cramping pain. First he needs to heal from the flare. On which maintenance med is he besides the 40 mg pred?

Has been on salofalk granules and some amazing chinese herbs through a very eminent chinese consultant. Christmas to now is definitely his danger time. Have tried so much and nothing really helps - humira next - but just trying everything first.

bentyl for cramps, heating pad and low residue diet? Give the pred some time. How old is he? I would be careful with major pain meds if too young. Hope he feels better soon.

Any enemas?

Cramping is my last symptom to resolve and by far my worst symptom. I can handle D multiple times a day but not the cramping. For me, aggressive management is needed such as IV prednisone. How long has he been on prednisone?

30mg for 5 days and then went to 40mg 3 days ago - so not long and I suppose slower to work the more times you have it. Last dose was ended last May.

He's 23. He finds enemas really hard.

Bentyl didn't work for me when I had horrible cramps. It was so awful because it was constant. No relief with bms or sitting or anything. Didn't sleep for more than an hour at a time because I was in so much pain. I had a heating pad that didn't do much and tylenol helped slightly. 40mg of pred might not be enough. When I was in that much pain I needed at least 60mg and the pain didn't completely go away until I'd had several remicade infusions. I'd say talk to his dr about upping pred until you have a plan and then he probably needs better maintenance meds.

For now I'd say heat and sitting in a reclined position. I found that was the most comfortable for me. I couldn't lay flat or on a side it just hurt too much but a recliner was slightly better. Hope he feels better soon! I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone.
