Hi I don't know if anyone can possibly tell me if this is colitis or not but I've been passing stools quite regular about 8 times a day with blood & mucous, sometimes just mucous, it's a cross between an urgency to go to just passing bits of skin then will be nothing in my stools at all sometimes, is this colitis or what could it be, please help, don't like the idea of being probed. Thankyou

Only a colonoscopy with biopsies can diagnose ulcerative colitis. Until you get one you are in the dark. It could be any number of conditions and cancer is always a possibility. Get a c-scope so you will know how to treat it and don't delay. Knowing is better than not knowing.

I would get in to see a GI sooner rather than later. Your going 8 times a day now. It could get a lot worse if you don't get it taken care of.

This is not a disease to bury your head in the sand with. You're not doing well now and the more it gets out of control the harder it is to treat. It's foolish to think that as bad as it is now you can just eat differently and not have to go to the doc. My case has been very mild compared to others and that is because I went to the doc immediately when having problems. A damaged colon can take forever to heal and a severely damaged colon may never heal. You have a choice of going on fairly easy meds now and hopefully getting it under control fairly soon or letting it get out of control and having to go on much harsher meds with a greater chance of having to have surgery. Don't be stupid because you may never get back the time you lost and you might lose the opportunity to use the safer meds. Holding out is a very big mistake.

I agree with the others, call your M.D. pronto, he/she can examine you and give you a referral to G.I. who will have you submit stool samples to rule out infection/parasites and set you up for a 'scope. The process can take some time so don't delay. I had a c-scope that pathologically revealed less than 2 cm inflammation that was either Crohn's or UC. My GI brushed it off, no one prescribed meds, my MD just raised her eyebrows and said "Oh, you did have colitis!" No one explained it was progressive and that there was no cure, and no meds were Rx'd. Fast forward one year and I have an agonizing flare with up to 20 bloody bms per day, they manage to get me another c-scope a month later and I'm too inflamed to go very far. It took another 3 months on Prednisone and 5-ASAs until I was into a borderline remission. DON'T WAIT. I still don't know the extent and nature of my UC.

Yup, that's how it all started for me. A colonoscopy will tell the doctor exactly what is going on. Don't be afraid of the scope....it really isn't a big deal at all. Good luck.
