Cloves/Eugenol thickens inner mucus

Another batch of information I found. It will be very worth being cautious and not overdoing the dosage. There are multiple tests showing the appropriate dose of cloves or clove extract increasing libido and testosterone via testicular enzyme actions but higher doses tested resulted in testicular toxicity and damage.

A little more information as a reference point. Don't let this information scare you as it's a very high dosage but there is one case study of a 2 year old consuming 5-10 ml of clove oil.

There ended out being acute liver damage, coma, and seizures.

The mechanism is actually extremely similar to that of paracetamol. The eugenol is processed in the liver into hepatotoxic conjugates which typically are handled well by glutathione. Damage occurs when the dosage creates levels of hepatotoxic conjugates that exceed the capacity of the glutathione in the body.

Coincidentally, in case of accidental overdose, it was found that acetylcysteine treatment completely prevents damage which is the same way they treat paracetamol overdoses. Acetylcysteine increases glutathione levels directly however constantly taking as a preventative measure may be counterproductive as acetylcysteine is also a mucolytic dissolving mucus.

That said, this was an extreme dose so this doesn't come close to scaring me from taking this. My extract says .39 ml up to 4x per day giving me 1.56 ml as a 155 lb human vs a 2 year old taking 5-10 ml in one dose however those with liver conditions or low glutathione may want to use caution.

Also noteworthy, if I were to calculate based on the below study, assuming the eugenol rat based ld50 of 11 mg per kg, for a 150 lb person, the ld50 lethal dose would be 748 mg of eugenol, or 830 mg of herb assuming 90% eugenol to be safe. My extract contains 93 mg of herb per dose which give me 8.5 doses were I assuming 100% absorbed systemic. So I would need 8.5 doses all at once to reach the assumed ld50 which I'm not silly enough to do as the instructions state 4 doses spread throughout the day and do not exceed maximum dosage is written in bold letters. I will also be very conservative though considering ld50 is death level but that doesn't mean damage doesn't come at lower levels. Good things at the right dose, bad things at high doses so use caution.

I've been testing clove tea, homemade from organic cloves (purchased) and no bad effects, maybe benefits. I do not grind the cloves because that has been a problem with other supplements, just steep 10 cloves in a cup of boiling water for an hour.

I take a teaspoon a day, pretty low dose, being cautious and also because my UC is pretty quiet in symptoms, always looking for the Nirvana of forgetting I have UC. Am able to drink green tea now with no urgency (big positive change), coffee was already tolerated so no changes there.

Old Mike, did you keep up with Clove Oil? Think it’s helpful?

I will say I was making a chicken and rice dish often for a period and spicing it Indian style, using clove and garam masala, and I think I did have some stool improvements during that time….

Would be interesting to supplement Clove Oil alone though…

This will be an ongoing UC log, until I see an adverse event. I am also on mk-7 and some COQ10.
Anyhow currently taking half of 500mg pill of clove bud powder so getting 250mg or so.
This is day 3, and had first bm, only one so far today.
Pretty long, minimal blood,about a couple 1/4 inch spots.
But about 1 inch in diameter,of which I have not seen in a long time.
We will see what comes next. Still had some urgency, but it shot out fast as a trophy stool.
First ones are usually better than what comes next.
The first stuff out earlier was mucus.
Cannot get excited yet, since I have seen this in the past.

#'s 2 and 3, much thinner but no blood.
