I had been hoping to actually learn something by stimulating discussion on this topic. I found the theory that IBS is actually a problem with the brain sending false signals to the intestinal tract very intriguing but alas, it seems to be a theory at best with no real proof. I was going to just give up but I did come up with one more question. Could it be that with IBS there is no problem at all involving the large intestine because IBS problems are all located in the small intestine, which could explain why tests targeting the large intestine fail to show anything wrong? Also, for those who have been diagnosed with both IBD and IBS who have had surgery, did the IBS go away after surgery?
I may be a few years late here, but IBS is definitely not "a crock" or "gobbledygook". I have both IBD (UC) and IBS and most of my symptoms recently have been IBS-related. How do I know? Because every time I'm getting ready to leave my house--and even when I'm about
to have a business call--I get horrible urgency, diarrhea, and cramping, and am stuck in the bathroom for an hour. These are GI issues triggered by stress and anxiety. This isn't at all related to colitis or inflammation; it's definitely a mental thing.
