Hey guys,

Can taking melatonin hurt my UC? I want to see if it helps me sleep but I'm worried about it making my symptoms worse.

I did fine with a low dose, about 1.5 mg, but started having UC symptoms when I went above 3 mg.

It shouldn't. If it was like Advil PM then it might because that's an NSAID but you should be fine on melatonin. Little thing with melatonin, my mom took it for a while and then she felt like it stopped working so she stopped taking it and sleeps great. So if after a while you find it's not working , don't up the dose or try something different. Just quit the melatonin and see if that works. She's told it to several people too and it has worked for all of them.

I don't have a problem falling asleep. I just always seem to keep waking up a couple times throughout the night.

Melatonin is a hormone and hormones can affect some UCers including me.

I have never had it bother my UC and I have taken 6.5 mg. I keep needing to take more for it to help me. I still wake up at night but it helps me fall back to sleep. I haven't found that coming off of it that I sleep better as mcfarl was saying. Wish I did.
