Is surgery an option for severe proctitis?

Just out of curiosity is surgery ever used for severe proctitis? If so, can a j pouch be created or just an illeostomy?

It is done for people who are bad enough or refractory. And it would be personal preference to choose an ileo or a j pouch. The j pouch is just essentially replacing your rectum and it becomes your new rectum.

Thanks for the info...I'm refractory and humira isn't really working.....

Of course, surgery is an option for all forms of UC. Unfortunately though, they would still remove your entire colon and rectum.

yes, obviously if one is getting an ileostomy or a j pouch the colon has to go.

If you couldn't have a j-pouch then there is also the internal K-pouch or BCIR as alternatives. I really liked my end ileostomy but I like my j-pouch better.

I'm pretty sure suebear had her colectomy and j-pouch for severe proctitis. I know her area of inflammation was very small but extremely stubborn. She had a great outcome.
