I have had UC for 33 years. Diagnosed at 16, ALMOST had surgery at 17...long story, now 49 and doing ok. No surgery so far. Colonoscopies every 2 yrs. As for meds, I'm on 2400mgs of asacol a day and that's it.
I read the book wheat belly that discusses the effect of wheat on UC and Chrohns. I know I can't completely stop wheat but I decided to make a few tweaks to my diet anyway. Started eating high fiber breads and gluten free pastas. Fewer carbs, more veggies and fruit. It has helped.
So my advice to the young lady looking for a quick solution, if you haven't already, try to change your diet for a week. Keep away from as much carbs, junk food, sugars as you can and eat healthier. See if it helps. It definitely can't hurt.
Also, I tried GNC's vitamin powder.....women's ultra mega max nutrition and it kinda constipated me which at the time I was ok with! Then it leveled out but it helped to calm things down.
I've had many ups and downs with this disease but without a doubt when I am eating better, my colitis is better!
Good luck to you
