On medication but symtpoms came back: What to do?

Hi guys,

I was recently diagnosed with UC in October after being in the hospital for a week and on heavy morphine, and steroids. I had symptoms of blood, mucus, extreme fatigue, etc. I started adding a probiotic, 30 billion bacteria, to my diet twice a day in early January and noticed a dramatic improvement within a week. I added A multivitamin as well and that helped with processing food and keeping up my energy. I have been on the low-fodmap diet since December and have been feeling amazing since.

about two weeks ago, with no change in my daily meical regime, I started noticing some symptoms creeping back: urgency first thing in the morning when I get up, going to the bathroom 5-7 times a day, slight pain and discomfort in my lower abdomen, fatigue, and mucus and small amounts of blood in the stool. WHat should I do? I am calling my doctor first thing Monday morning, but am shocked that this is happening when I have taken such good care of my gut, have not been remiss in taking my medication and am wondering what I should do to get back to normal. Any advice is welcome!!!!!

The steroids can stop the attack on your colon, giving it time to heal. As you taper back the steroids, hopefully your mtnc program is good enough to keep you in remission because the attack will resume again. I'm somewhat confused as to why the doctors apparently didn't give you a medical mtnc program. The program you were on is a mtnc program but it was not 100% effective so after the steroids were removed you got gradually worse until it was finally noticeable. You could go back on steroids again until you reach remission again but this time you know what you did before is not quite good enough to keep you in remission. You will need more next time around.

You are not on any uc medications, that's the problem. Uc requires maintenance medications for life.

Wow, that must've slipped my mind. I've been on 400mg of asacol had 3 times of day since being hospitalized. I took prednisone for a month and a half and then tapered off way back in November

You probably need to have your meds adjusted. Maybe your doctor could add rectal meds like Canasa, Rowasa, or Cortifoam. It sounds like most of your issues are low (in the rectum area) based on your current symptoms so these meds would likely help you.

The recommended dosage of asacol is 4,800 mgs a day, you're on a fraction of that. Ask your gastroenterologist about that. Also, I second rectal-melamine (a.k.a. Pentasa enema, or mesalizine enema).

The highest recommended dosage for Asacol is 4800mg daily.....but you are on a very low dosage and should have been on at least 2400 mg daily to start.

You were also not given rectal medications which could have helped a whole lot as well.

Where exactly is the extent of your UC...limited or throughout your colon?
