I've been supplementing Mag for years prior to my UC dx because I knew our soils are depleted of Magnesium and most of us are deficient. However after I consulted a Naturopath she said not to take it with UC because it causes diarrhea. I now only supplement 100 mg before bed, as it does have a calming effect. No studies (yet) can link magnesium deficiency to autoimmune diseases. BUT there are a number of studies which have found a correlation between low Mag and inflammatory response. BTW serum Magnesium level is not accurate as magnesium levels must be measured in the tissue.
I basically agree. I used to supplement much more before my UC but because magnesium, especially magnesium citrate, is considered a laxative I cannot take more 200-300 mg per day. But I find that amount to be very helpful for general health.
