I don't really have any commentary on this article. I wanted to post it here to see if anyone had any theories on how, if this article is accurate, we could reduce the risk of flaring.

It seems if we could all move to Florida, but not near a swampy area-or live in a bubble, we'd be set! rolleyes

All I know is I rarely get sick, even in the winter so I wonder what that says about my immune system...and I live in Canada. Last time I had a bad flu (tummy and bronchitis together) was 4 winters ago. Since then I haven't even had a small cold or anything....it's fairly common for me not to get sick very often, it tends to span many years apart.

Very interesting Levi! Strangely enough I usually have probs with my UC more in the spring...wonder what that says about me. I am also battling a cold now..boo. Thanks for posting!

Interesting find, but not at all surprising. Perhaps could be PART of the puzzle as to why people in the north tend to be more prone to inflammatory conditions. Kinda falls in line with the recent research that showed that new immigrants to Ontario had extremely high incidence rates of IBD.

Yea was going to say the same thing might have something to do with the north south gradient,
and possibly seasonality. Interesting the amount of gene expression changes.

This is exactly my case - i've entered into (as yet long) remission last year after spending one month in Latin America, maybe it's vitamin D

Maybe it's a factor but correlation does not equal causation. Many people in northern latitudes are Northern Europeans who seem to have higher rates of IBD. Is it in their genes or is it genes+geography?

My UC diagnosis came after 20 years in Delaware (near New Jersey and Maryland I know most people don't know where it's located). We moved to Florida a couple years later but UC did not get better (at all) due to southern climate.

I haven't had a cold or flu in 15 years, flu shot only half the time.

I think the premise is that, once you've already developed an IBD, moving to a climate that has a very low incidence of IBD isn't going to reverse your IBD or make it better, according to research genetics play a role in the behavior and severity of IBD, once the IBD is turned on, at this point since they don't know how to actually cure IBD, it's on no matter what you do...even if you're in remission you still have IBD cuz the cells in your genes say you do.

I was kinda responding to ewa's comment about remission after a month in Latin America. Not so for me. Florida not far enough south ? :-)

UC is lifetime once turned on for sure. Remembering the book written by German doctor who had great success with UC patients when he removed bread from their diet. His comment "Once UC always UC."

No seasonality for UC, but yes for crohns,worse in summer.

Finally a good explanation why some people experience seasonal flares.
