I increased my prednisone to 40 mg today. Took 4 lialda as usual today, 3 tumeric and slippery elm later in the day. The only think that changed was upping the pred....my bum feels quite good but the rest of me feels like poo. I have vomitted 3 times today! I never vom. any ideas what happened here?

Pred can be hard on your stomach. You should take it with food

Did you take it all at one time? Breaking up the pred into two 20 mg doses might help. I myself can't take 4 Lialda at one time or it will make me feel yucky. I always take them 2 in am and 2 in pm when flaring.

Pred can definitely upset your stomach although I never had aproblem taking 40 mg all at once as long as it was with food.

Why did you increase your prednisone? Is it because you're getting worse? Worsening UC could be why you're vomiting.

If it is the colitis getting worse, you need to get extra aggressive. For me, once I start vomiting, I'm really sick. Like headed to the hospital sick.

I agree with kiptyn, once I'm nauseated and then start vomiting, I need to be in the hospital for management. I never throw up because of prednisone.

i usually vomit when my flare is getting severe. that's a sign that i need hospitalized for iv steroids and dehydration. even so, i vomit a lot in the hospital until i get my flare under control and that can take months.

They upped my pred bc he started me at 20
And it didn't do a thing. Haven't been nauseous since thankfully. We shall see how today goes. I don't think I am dehydrated since I don't have loose stools...just significant blood loss. I'm a nurse and my VS are not indicative of dehydration....I'm
Just so tired of this. I wish something would actually help. I thought prednisone was supposed to be the Magic drug??!

Couple of thoughts. When I've needed prednisone, my docs have always started with 40-50 mg so I think your dose was too small. When prednisone started taking 2-3 weeks to start working on my flares, my former doc moved me to remicade. It was a smart move.

Last time I went to the ER 10 years ago was vomiting with blood. Doc thought it was not UC related and sent me home, I was fine the next day, probably food-related due to New Year's buffet. Good thing you're a nurse so you don't get worried easily.

Hahaha I probably get more worried as a nurse bc I know all the possible outcomes.

How long does pred usually take for you guys? I have been on 40mg for 3 days now and have had some slight subtle improvements but nothing to write home about. Urgency has improved (but I never had loose or frequent stools, just a constant feeling of needing to go...and when I did it was a blood bath). Still bleeding quite heavily though. I'm not sure if I am being impatient or if it typically takes a
week or so to see some improvement...if only I were a GI nurse lol
No more n/v fortunately.
I am meeting with a new GI doc next fri. Just not sure if I will survive that long mentally.

At least a few weeks at least, it all depends on how much damage your uc flareup has caused. Your body has got to have time to heal, prednisone stops the attack.

The first time I was on pred it helped really quickly within a few days but the second time it never really did a whole lot for me so I tapered off. Rectal meds were key in getting my flare under control.

I would ask for a steriod enema. May help more with the bleeding. Each flare can take longer to get under control and it seems like it is taking forever because you started at 20 mg of pred which doesn't do much for most people.

I'm on hydrocortisone foam. Been on that for a few weeks- also not doing much of anything :(

I agree completely, then transition to mesalamine enemas until bleeding stops and use Canasa suppositories as maintenance down the road. Bleeding is best stopped topically and that means enemas.

Well I am on a steroid enema- the hydrocortisone. Is there something else I should be requesting that has worked for you guys???

I use them at bedtime. Retain all night....somehow

I saw where you said your on the foam. I don't think that will reach as high as the enemas will. Do you know where your inflammation is located? You could also ask for the mesalamine enemas and give those a go.

I've only used the steriod rectal med in suppository form but have used the mesalamine enemas with very good success.

And to answer your question, I was dx'd with Proctitis but I am getting a colonoscopy in a few weeks bc they believe it has progressed :(

Proctitis can be really hard to treat. It is sooo stubborn. You can have horrible symptoms from only a small amount of inflammation.

As much as the scope prep stinks, it is good your having another one to see where things stand so you can treat properly. I started out with left sided UC, then only proctitis and now completely clear. It can happen.

Wow that's great news for you! Congrats. And it's so nice to hear positive stories as well....thank you for your help. You have actually made me feel a little better and more optimistic.
