I feel like I've been asking a question on here almost everyday this month! Sorry, but here comes another.

I'll be going on prednisone shortly, and it's the first time being on it in a year and 7 months. Which for me, is a long break. Does this mean that I shouldn't experience as many side effects since I haven't been on it in a while? I noticed in the past, that if I was on break from prednisone for 3 months for example, I would experience worse side effects than if I haven't been on them in a year or so. Can anyone with experience chime in and maybe give me some insight on their experiences? I'm pretty nervous and had bad side effects last time I was on it, I'm hoping they won't be as severe since I haven't been on it in a while! I also plan on just doing it for a short period of time, 10 weeks total (8 weeks of tapering, 2 weeks at 40mg).

Maybe try medrol i switched to that from prednisone because the side affects were driving me nuts
I still have them just not as badly

Every course of prednisone is different in which side effects you get, everybody gets side effects. It doesn't matter if you were on pred recently or a long-time ago; no difference.

If you are concerned about it, ask insted for either uceris (a delayed release pill) or steroid enemas, as they are mostly topical and therefore have a lot less side effects.

Side effects can very with every course but you will have them. The bigger question is what treatment plan are you going to use to stay off the pred? It is a really bad plan to use it to get to remission, do nothing to stay in remission, and to continually get back on the pred every time you get worse. Pred will eventually destroy you body, guaranteed. I work in a field close to the medical field and have seen the effects of long term steroid use. It can add 30 years to your age. Before you know it your body will be in it's fifties. Even surgery is better than that.

Gary/ in what ways does it age your body? I only have been in it once this year and once in Dec last year- but then for a year back in 2006. I'm only 35. The doc is talking Remicade starting in mid June- appt in two weeks to discuss.

Gary, do you have a source for steroid use makes people look older than they really are? I do not believe it and have not heard it before.

I'm assuming Gary means that Pred will "age your body" as in your bone density, arthritis etc. all those beautiful side effects that can come with it.

Yep. That is what I meant. No proof, just years of observation of working close to the medical field and seeing numerous patients who had been on steroids for years and years. Fifty and sixty year olds walking around with walkers, slumped over, and taking baby steps like they were in their eighties or nighties. Really sad and many of them had diabetes to boot and pretty much all of them were severely overweight.

I had a year break in between my two doses of pred and still had all the nasty side effects. Moon face my personal fave, hot flashes my next favorite, trouble sleeping, joint pain and of course weight gain.
