UC and lyme disease

Hi everyone,

I have been doing good as far as "UC" goes, but my continuing joint pain and other neurological type issues have me once again suspecting lyme disease. My neck and upper back pain is far more debilitating than my GI symptoms ever were.

I know there have been posts on here in the past about lyme and UC - but I can't ever seem to find any follow up. Does anyone have a diagnosis of both and/or does anyone have experience on any long term doxycycline treatment?

I had to take azithromycin "Zpack" for 5 days due to a cold, and my joint pain and some other issues seemed to improve, but then I had a ridiculously bad UC flare for all of 5 days, one week after stopping the antibiotic.

To add further support, at my last colonoscopy there was "no evidence of signs of chronic colitis" yet I am still taking my Colazal.

Don't stop the Colazal, ever. Whenever taking antibiotics you should take some high dose probiotics at the same time to avoid the flare you experienced. I can't help you with the Lyme disease question but many of us complain of various joint pains, even while in remission so that is actually quite common. Do you have a reason why you suspect Lyme disease?

I had a confirmed case of Lyme's a while back while I was also in a bad flare. The Doxy actually helped my UC symptoms a lot believe it or not. I was on it for several months. Have you been dx'ed with Lyme's?

Therearemiracles has posted many times about her ordeal with Lyme. Apparently a drug-resistant strain has emerged. RE antibiotics: if you have to take Rx get a package of Culturelle for 1 mo. dosing. Research has shown it to protect against C. difficile. The Z-pack seems less harmful than other abx, according to member posts here. Stay away from Doxy, which has caused UC in people who took it longterm for acne relief. Agree with Gary that you should remain on UC Rx, flare or no-flare!!!!!!!!! Do not play with fire by quitting UC med! / Old Hat (34 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
