Post colectomy/ileostomy question?

A little over a week ago I had colectomy and ileostomy surgery. All went well and I'm slowly recovering but at times I still feel the urge to have a bowel movement. A few times I have sat down and a very very small amount of what I assume to be stool has come out. Is this normal? Has this happened to anyone else? Is there something I could be eating that's causing this? If it is normal, how long does it usually last? I've had problems for nearly 2 years so I'm still psychologically adjusting to all of this which probably doesn't exactly help with the whole "having the urge to go" ordeal either.

I had a temporary loop ileostomy for 4 months while going through the j pouch procedure. In that time I would get the urge to "go" and I would have to go sit on the toilet and some mucus and a small amount of stool would come out. I was told by my surgeon that it was totally normal. It lasted the entire time I had the ileo. It wouldn't happen everyday though. I'm not sure if it's normal for a permanent end ileostomy though. You can post this question in the ostomies forum here as well.

Is your ileo temporary or permanent?

Thank you for your reply! I hadn't even noticed the ostomy forum..
As of now it will be temporary, but we're still not 100% certain it's not crohns, so that changes things. Plus I feel I am practically scarred for life and almost never want to have to use the bathroom normally again. I almost to the point of not wanting it to be just temporary...

Sorry you've have a rough time. If it's a loop ileostomy that you have, then I know for sure its normal to pass some mucus and small amounts of stool.

It's completely normal to pass mucus and even blood out of your rectum after colectomy surgery. It happens even in people who don't have IBD, because of diversion colitis: that's a form of inflammation which occurs when there isn't any stool passing through the bowel. Basically, the chances of mucus stopping of its own accord without a surgical reconnection or suppository treatment is slim to none.

Staying with an ileostomy is a perfectly valid choice and there are a few on this site who decided to do that, rather than go on to have a j-pouch. You may change your mind in the future, and that's fine too.
