It can take a long time for meds to kick in, I'm surprised that your GI only gave you antibiotics and not any maintenance meds....antibiotics alone aren't going to make your symptoms disappear unfortunately.
It's difficult to live with IBD since it's chronic, it varies for each from mild to severe, I've been housebound many times for many yrs at a time with it...of course I also have IBS that coexisted with my crohn's colitis (crohn's affecting the colon) about 12 years in to having CD I developed IBS as well and lactose intolerance.
You'll know when your body's healing when it starts to feel better, not as many trips to the toilet, less or no bleeding, etc but like I said this tends to take a long time because the meds are slow to work for the most part.
IBD can definitely run in families, my mom had UC and I have Crohn's (it mainly affects my colon, therefore referred to as crohn's colitis, many get confused and think it means they have both crohn's and UC which is not the case, that can happen to though, but it's very rare at approximately 2%) so with your grandfather having crohn's it's not far off that your gut issues are likely related, they don't know how it gets passed down, let alone so many other things they don't yet know in this day and age, it's pathetic really.
