Getting diagnosed with a chronic illness is difficult and certainly takes a while to get used to. I'd give it time. As once you get your uc symptoms under control, it's easier to forget about
uc and move on. Many do live normal lives with uc. But for some, uc can be an emotional struggle as it creates uncertainty about
the future, anxiety, and lower self-image. Some are able to cope on their own, some seek counseling, therapy, or are on antidepressants.

I struggled for a long time before finally giving in to getting counselling and taking SSRI meds. It was the best thing I could have done. UC still sucked but I didn't feel like jumping off a cliff any more.
I'm a firm believer that having UC messes up our body's ability to regulate our mood. Add that to the mind f-ck of having UC in the first place. It truly is an evil disease.

Definitely explains why we can get extra grumpy at times! When you feel sick to your stomach literally it's naturally going to affect your mood and it's not always easy to avoid conflicts as a result...throw depression into the mix and that makes it even tougher to deal with people and daily life issues.

You're right, there are about
100 million neutrons in the gut - more than in the spinal cord - that work in conjunction with your brain to help regulate mood. Naturally, when your gut is having problems, your mood is disturbed. Pathways involved the production of serotonin, our feel-good chemical, are particularly affected. The gut is considered the second-brain for that reason as it mediates immune responses in the body. Scientists refer to it today as the Enteric Nervous System. There's really a lot of truth in Hippocrates stance that all disease begins in the gut, not that it makes certain diseases any more preventable.
For anyone affected by poor changes in mood, I'd recommend Kratom Powder (red vein strand) to help balance things out. It's a legal herb here in the UK, not sure about
its status in other parts of the world. I can testify to the fact that it puts back the spring in my step if I'm dealing with brain-fog or wake up tired.
Now that science is finally figuring out the role the gut plays in diseases, it does mean the future of health care is looking brighter and brighter every day.
