hi all went for my colonoscopy on 3rd september and was diagnosed with UC, been on mezavant XL for 6 weeks now and things have been going pretty good. The bleeding was the first thing to go then gradually my BM's have went down to 2-4 per day and are solid most of the time.
how do you know when your in remission and also is it still normal to have bad days? i had a stir fry last night with satay sauce and i feel like im suffering today, my BM's have been a bit softer although not diarrhea and ive got lower back pain and a sharp pain under my left rib and just feel a bit yucky. i just keep worrying the tablets will stop helping and ill be back having bloody diarrhea a few times a day.
does having a bad day mean im headed for a flare up?
thanks in advance, im still trying to educate myself on it all. xx

Hi. Welcome to the forum. Sorry you had to join.
One bad day does not mean you are flaring.
The most important thing is to take your maintnence meds everyday.
If you post a profile signature than people can see what you are talking etc...

Everyone has a bad day now & then. If you start having many bad days then it's time to worry. You know when you are in remission when you don't have any blood, urgency, BMs are formed, and you generally have 1-3 BMs/day though this number can vary. Basically remission is very close to what you were like before you developed UC.
Be sure to always take your meds -- even when you feel well! And don't be tempted to reduce the dosage until you have been in a rock solid remission for a long period of time. I'd recommend not reducing for at least a year to give your colon a good long time to heal. You should check with your dr about
that.

thanks, ive been told to reduce my dosage in 2 weeks, down to 2 tablets a day, but the doc says if symptoms come back i can go back to 4 tablets, but dont really want to cut down just yet in case things start going wrong lol xx

Your probably feeling yucky due to the food. If I was flaring that would not be something I could eat. Heck even now it can be dicey.
I would not be cutting down on your pills for quite a long time. I didn't go down until a year after diagnosis. That would just be asking for trouble, plus I don't think you should still be going 2-4 times a day unless that was normal for you pre-UC.
I would also ask for rectal meds.

I believe Mezavant is like 5 ASA drug. These group of drugs are safest so if they are working, don't rush to reduce them. Once you feel solid remission, you can reduce. And please keep taking it even when you are in remission for maintenance.
I made mistake by stopping them after 1 year and ended up with flare which lasted almost 1 and 1/2 year and was very hard to get in remission. I took prednisone for almost year and now on 6mp. My liver tests are little bit elevated and I might have to go on biologics(humira/remicade..) . So please take your maintenance dose even though it feels like lot of medications, they are safest.
Wish you long remission.

Are you having any urgency with bms? Food is food, not all agrees with everyone orr our guts at varying times.
I suspect you still have mild inflammation...strongly suggest you get on rectal meds. Probably suppositories will help to start at this point. I would lower the oral dosage by one pill a month and no faster.
Where exactly is the
location extent of your UC?
