Hello, I'm very new to UC, came down with a flare on 10/15. Had endoscopy and sig-oscopy done on the 17th. And put on Lialda and canasa. 5 days later switched to mesalamine enemas instead. So far I've had few bad days with lots of D, blood and mucous, followed by few good days in between with minimal discomfort and no bm at all. Today was a good day but I'm seeing something new this evening. Bad a very small bm at night that was dark purple. What could it mean? Is it still canasa from last night? Or could it be older blood since I haven't passed any today?
Also started feeling lots of pain in my tail bone out of nowhere? Could it be related to UC?
I have mre scheduled tomorrow. Doc wants to rule out crohns.
Thank you for your help.

The pain in your tail bone could actually be rectal inflamation. Or it could be pain in your tail bone. Many people experience pain in their joints and muscles. It can be an extra intestinal manifestation of ibd. Meaning that aside from the symptoms of the intestines people get other annoying things to deal with.

Oh yes, pain of various varieties can be a cousin to uc.
Lots of info like this out there >

Sounds like your gastroenterologist is following the standard procedure, start with lialda, canasa, and meslamine enemas. If your flare started on 10/15 then it's not unusual to still have symptoms from it. Uc bms are very inconsistent on a day-to-day basis, especially when healing. However, you should be seeing week-to-week improvements. If you are reaching a plateau or backsliding then contact your gastroenterologist right away as you might need a stronger medication like prednisone to beat your flare.
Dark purple bm is interesting. It could be from food dyes, something you ate, or a supplement. It could be blood from higher up (like stomach or small intestine). Generally blood is bright red when it comes close from the source (rectal bleeding), gets progressively darker as it originates further back in the large intestine, and is eventually black from the stomach.

If you used a mesalamine enema or even the canasa at night and then didn't go to the bathroom in the morning the purple could be from the enema/suppository. Sometimes they turn things a shade of purple. You may notice purple stains in the toilet.

If you have any bleeding at all...that will mix with mucus and the enema and dark maroon or purplish is normal. You should be on the nightly enemas untill all symptoms stop....including going through a constipation type phase. It will take a while. Then you should go to every second night for a while...etc.
