Side effect of prednisone ??

hi everyone I'm not sure if the prednisone is causing me to have brain fog where I don't feel my self anymore. I can't think straight and cannot concentrate anymore. I feel like I can't put together a coherent thought and have a conversation with anyone like pressured speech where I can't follow a conversation. I use to be really loud and fun but when I started coming down on my meds I became like this and also I have had a rough year as I have been in hospital many times. I'm finally down to 10mg on predsione. I'm not sure if it's the medication that's causing me to act like this or I'm depressed ?? Does anyone else feel like this while they were on this medication

One common side effect of prednisone is mild euphoria. I've gotten that at times, but only when I was taking 30mg per day or more.

Delirium isn't listed as one of the side effects

but insomnia is. Are you having trouble sleeping? At 10mg per day I wouldn't expect any side effects. That's not much more than your body produces naturally.

Yes, brain fog is a prednisone side effect. Prednisone is notorious for many side effects.

Yes Oliviaaa, it's the prednisone - the only thing I found that helped was just knowing that it in fact was the pred and I could do nothing about it ! small comfort, but at least most of the time I could convince myself I wasn't losing my mind.

boys and girls, use prednisone ONLY when necessary !

That's the prednisone talking, and I found that the brain fog became worse as I tapered down from 30-10. Once I got below 10 everything normalized for me.

Prednisone can cause euphoria, irritability, sleeplessness and even psychosis in extreme cases. We've all experienced some of its short-term side effects. I can tell you from my own experience that the long-term side effects are much worse. I'm glad you're tapering off of it.

Yup, exactly the same every time.
Then make up for missed sleep.
Then sad for no reason at all.

Then, finally, back to me.

But, it does work.

Really happier! Did you feel the exact same as I do with not feeling like talking and not feeling like yourself ??

I was on 40 mg. of Prednisone, tapered to 15mg. It still feels as though I have a briick in my head . So to speak . I have become much more forgetful . I put something down and then can't remember where I put it to the point where I can't find my reading glasses or car keys, I have actually started to cry thinking I am going crazy!!! My sense of direction while driving has gotten worse , as well. The Prednisone also has made me so anxious, my Dr. had to prescribe a mild tranquilizer . I also have gotten a ravenous appetite.. I gained 10 pounds in 17 days.. From 115 to 125 and counting . I have to be on it for at least another two months while awaiting to see if in 2016 Medicare will pay for Entyvio. I can't wait to get off this nasty drug. How long have you been on it? What else are you taking?

I have been on it for 5 months and I'm tapering off it at the moment and I'm finally down to 5mg. I'm also on imuran, pentasa and an enema

I have been on two rounds of prednisone in the past and both times my doctor cautioned me about side effects when tapering down below 15-20mg. I never had any problems as I recall. Maybe this is what you are experiencing? Mary

Somewhere there is the thread of me asking the same question. It takes time, but it gets better. It is definitely the prednisone. Happens every time. Thank God I'm smarter the rest of the time.

could the symptoms irreversible?, after all these years my life after pred has been being filled with stress and ANXIETY (and unusual behaviour) which now lead to depression, of course i have changed to another person , i don't know who i am anymore. so after stop preds could the psychosis really go away ? for me it never go away (though i have never taken any medication from psychiatrist) , or it could go away if i tried. or should i admit it that steroids has nothing to do with it, and it was just me happen to be depressed and anxiety.

ps i have recently met the psychiatrist and told them that the last time i took pred was in 2009 or so , and i told her that i feel strange ever since , but she didn't believe me , she told me that the symptoms should go away after i stopped taking it , it shouldn't last this long , ok i get it , but i still strongly believe that it was pred that triggered everything.

ps.2 my psychiatrist gave me wellbutrin , will it help any recommendation?

Engo this is an old thread. Depression is a very common side effect after a pred taper and of UC itself, because much serotonin is produced in the gut. Mine was unrelenting for the last year and a half until my MD finally persuaded me to try Zoloft. At that point I was afraid to leave the house, lost interest in all hobbies. Zoloft helped enormously and I am back to "normal". Please try the wellbutrin, and if that doesn't work there are others. Welcome to the forum. It would help if you went to your profile and edited your signature to include when you were diagnosed with UC, etc.

Ah yes, what doesn't kill you makes you dumber? Unfortunately, this is a common side effect. My regular doctor actually put me on sertraline (Zoloft) to counter the effects, and it does help, even though my GI said there is no correlation (I strongly disagree). I even got so lost one night in an area I new well, I had to rely on my cell phone to get me home! Hang in there. We all have to do what we can to get by. I have been off of prednisone for some time now, but still have the effects.
