IBD with constipation?

Hello,

Is it possible to have IBD but only have constipation, no diarrhea? I have iritis in both eyes and have tons of yellow mucus (that's mostly all I have) and severe constipation. The abdominal pains are bad but bearable but I feel pain in certain spots in my colon as stool moves through. The mucus will sometimes be tinted with blood, not old blood but bright blood. I'm wondering if I should see a GI doctor. I've been in a huge iritis flare (can't link it to any other auto-immune disease as of yet) for about a year and also have SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). I have fever and chills unless I take Xifaxan. Fever and chills go away after a few weeks on Xifaxan but seem to eventually come back. No weight loss. Last time I was checked for SIBO was March, 2015 and have just been assuming my GI problems were SIBO. Not so sure now. I was told years ago that I had ischemic colitis after having severe abdominal pain and blood in my stool. My pain now is that as severe as the ischemic colitis but seems to be getting worse. Could this all just be IBS?

Yes, regarding UC...it depends on where it's limited to...and that would be in the rectum.

Yes, you could have IBS - C. That also would mean that the rectum is controlling the shots.

You will need a c-scope to help determine what's going on...with biopsies to determine if it could be UC or still ischemic colitis.

SIBO wouldn't be an issue creating constipation in my opinion.

I also see you have type II diabetes.

Do you have a gastro doctor, and have you asked questions and are you having further testing?

I do have a gastro doctor and my last colonoscopy was two years ago. It was all normal. I think it might be time for another. Thank you.

how did you get diagnosed with SIBO and colitis if you do not have a GI doctor?

I do have a gastro and was dx with a breath test for SIBO. The ischemic colitis was dx by biopsy about 15 years ago.

It' probably is time for a visit to your GI doc at the very least, and make a list of questions to help get the answers you need.

It is possible that you are constipated, the bright red blood means its generally lower down in the GI tract so it could be something like hemmies or anal tears from straining or passing large or hard stools

I have found that diet modification eliminates my constipation. My GI thinks it is UC rather than IBS causing these issues. I've identified foods that cause C but when things are going well I indulge in them and then have to get back on the wagon.

My C-causing foods: fiber including nuts and fruit like pears and plums, anything gluten and wheat and other grains including rice.

Foods that help: well cooked spinach with butter, well cooked baby carrots, coconut and olive oil on as much food as possible. Potatoes of all kinds are gut-friendly for me.

I don't have any experience with SIBO but do get colon gas from ice cream and other sweets. When gas is a problem I take oil of oregano pills kind of as an anti-bacterial measure. Seems to help.

OTC that helps: Vitamin E suppositories (when not bleeding)

RX that helps: mesalamine enemas and suppositories
