Mount Sinai Toronto IBD Center- Surgery- Comments/Referrals/Experience NEEDED!

Hello,

I think I have really come to terms with surgery and The Mount Sinai Hospital is about 5 hours away from me - Ive heard it is the best place in Canada to get your colon removed.

Does anyone have any positive experiences from Mount Sinai, or any colorectal surgeons that you have experiences with?

I cant add anything since Im actually in the exact same situation; looking for a surgeon at Mt. Sinai. I think it may be a good idea to ask your GI to talk to GIs are Mt. Sinai, since they can likely refer your GI to good surgeons. Im from London, Hamilton, and Aurora (depending on time of year) so Im a little closer I suppose.

You might want to try the ostomy forum. While we have a lot of active UCers here, most of the people who have had surgery are on the ostomy board. Another thing I notice about people on the ostomy board, is that once they had surgery and got past it, often they don't post so much. Only people who are having trouble or are really well known members stick around. You might be able to use the search feature at the top right to find some info.

You might be able to find past threads of member Paul L-- who had his surgery there about 4 yrs ago: a middle-aged UCer employed ft & family man. He posted a lot of details over time & had a female surgeon there, as I recall. / Old Hat (35 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I recently had a surgery consult with Dr. Helen Macrae at Mt. Sinai. Her schedule is packed, 4 months to get the referral and if I decided on surgery (NOT!) it was a least a 6 month wait and much longer times between take down's etc.

She was gentle while doing a scope but unfortunately she is an incredibly soft spoken woman. I had a very difficult time hearing her and was constantly asking her to repeat herself to no avail. Had surgery been an option for me I'd visit her a couple of times before making a decision. She may have good surgery skills but I'd want to understand what she's saying, especially if there are complications!

Incidentally, Mt. Sinai does prescribe IVIG for the treatment of IBD if that interests you.
