Hi my name is brittany, i am 16 years old and was just diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. It all started on thanksgving day, i went to the bathroom and experienced rectal bleeding, with really bad rectal and abdodminal pain. so i told my mom, and we made an appointment with my gi doctor. They took stool tests for different things and they all came back negative, but they did see blood. My doctor decided to perform an colonoscopy, and endonoscopy, and inflammation was found from biopsies in 3 different sections of my colon. she treated me with an antibiotic first to rule out infection, but it didnt work so she decided to start treating me for ulcerative colitis. I am now taking Budesonide(oral) 3 pills a day, and Lialda, 2 pills a day. Im really hoping the medicine will work soon because this is literally like horriable. I was also just wondering if anyone had advice, like if their is a certain diet i should be following. Thanks so much!!!!

I am so sorry for your diagnosis. But it will take a while and you and your dr will figure it out!

If u were my kid, she is 16 too, i would stop all junk food and put her on low residue diet, look that up.

I would feed her pasta, mash potatoes, cooked veggies, canned fruit, bread, rice chex, etc.

Just try to give your tummy easy stuff.

Is the Budesonide the delayed release Uceris? I do well with it, but some don't get much result.

2 Lialda is more of a maintenance dose. If the symptoms don't subside, you should ask about 4 pills/day.

Many can find relief by taking a mild maintenance drug such as Lialda supplemented with rectal meds as needed. You will find that almost everyone recommends mesalamine enemas with rave reviews. It is the one med with the fewest side effects. Ask your doctor about Rowasa.

As far as diet, a food diary can be very useful. Gluten (wheat) can trigger symptoms for some. Maybe it isn't a coincidence that your symptoms began around the holidays. Look at our signatures and you will see popular supplements that some find useful.

I did great with budesonise (uceris)
Stay the course, check out SCD, Paleo and try to get some light cardio exercise in at least 3 times a week.

Be careful about the budesonide it should only be used for a little while to treat a bad flare and then let the safer meds maintain.
