Question About Adult Diapers

Hello list,

I'm hoping someone can shoot some advice my way. My mom has been living with colitis for years and is now 73 years old. When she has a flare-up lately, there's no question of leaving the house - it's hard for her to be able to leave the bathroom. She uses Depends but finds that if she, for instance, has an accident in her sleep, or if she's unable to move to the bathroom fast enough, she will overflow the Depends. I'm wondering of anyone has any experience with other kinds of protective wear that might work better for her so she can get around a little more when she's flaring up.

unfortunately, I dont have any advice of anything better but maybe someone will

try putting chucks pads on her bed so that if the depends overflow than the cleanup will be easier.

Depending on the amount of poo she needs to contain she may be needing full on plastic adult diapers (most likely on available online or specific home health stores), the adult diapers sold in pharmacy are for urinary incontinence. In wake time hours or to hold only smaller amounts of poo or for less time then one can get away with the common diapers, however, from my research depends aren't the best suited for UC purposes. It was recommended to me(on this site) to use the Teena brand, most absorbent, unisex diapers. I have, and the have worked wonderfully.

I am of the belief that if you need diapers, you probably need to change your treatment plan. UC that is uncontrolled will put you in the position where you can't leave the house for fear of an accident, it sounds like she's gotten to that point. She should see her GI and get some options for treating the inflammation. This way, hopefully she can get the inflammation under control and she can lose the diapers completely. At 73 she should be out living and enjoying retirement, not worried about which diapers to buy. Take action against this awful illness.

I've used these a few times. They are visible under a pair of pants, but I found that they held a LOT.

If she is overflowing the Depends during sleep, it does sound like she needs medical re-evaluation as well as protective underlying pads. To my experience, leaking a whole lot indicates severe inflammation or possibly a pelvic floor disorder affecting bowel control. / Old Hat (35 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
