For the past few weeks I've had anal itching every day, on and off all day. I doubt it's pinworms but who knows. I have an anal fissure that is almost healed, could that be it? Other theories are UC related symptoms, maybe I have developed a sensitivity to Canada and rectiv (nitro ointment for fissure). Any other thoughts or experience with this? It's driving me insane. I'm going to make an appt with my doc but any suggestions in the meantime...?

Yes, I've definitely had this experience!! It's awful. I went to a dermatologist and she recommended hemorrhoid suppositories with hydrocortisone. I believe these were the ones:

Honestly, though, even the off-brand hemorrhoid suppositories (without hydrocortisone) worked well. In the meantime, avoid ANY OTHER cream or ointment, including hydrocortisone, because that will just make it worse. And try not to scratch—you'll only inflame the area. I know it's really uncomfortable, but just stick with the suppositories (you can use a few a day), and avoid touching the area, and things will improve. I'd also recommend gently rinsing the area with (ONLY) water in the shower, but don't overdo it.

It's definitely a terrible experience and I had uncontrollable pain and itching in the rectal area for over 4 years! I found out that it was a fissure, but you can't heal the fissure unless you can stop from scratching. As I'm sure you know, it's almost impossible to resist the urge to itch (especially at night) so that puts you in a tough situation. After researching more on anal fissures, I found that the symptoms are very similar to that of Pruritus Ani. If you search Pruritus Ani, you will likely come across a product called Pranicure ointment. I'd highly recommend you try using that product and follow the instructions carefully...it works 10x better than hydrocortisone cream or anything else on the market. Stops the itching and allows the fissure to heal within a couple of weeks (at least it did for me).

I use a prickly pear cactus to scratch that itch from the outside, and to get at the inside itchy spots, eating a couple of handfuls of unshelled sunflower seeds usually does the trick. It's probably akin to what a python who eats a porcupine might experience. The only other analogy I can think of is defecating a hairbrush.

It might be slightly OT, but you can't spell analogy without anal.

Years ago, I had intense anal itching everyday. I had it looked at and everything was normal looking. Doctor concluded it was a food allergy. I determined it was the plastic capsules from the probiotics. I was taking 3 a day. I stopped and itching went away.

Are you using any medicine that use capsules?
