CCinPA - Entocort only comes in 3mg pills, I think. The max dose is 9mg, so very obviously, to take the max dose you need to take 3 pills. I've only taken Entocort once before and that was about
6 years ago. It wasn't quite as good or fast as pred, but it was certainly better than it is now. I wonder if I've developed steroid resistance after taking it half a million times.
RockerGirl - I have a feeling even pred wouldn't be the magic bullet for me this time. Even if it was, it's at its most effective at 40mg and I can't be knocking about
on 40mg pred for several weeks. But that said, if Entocort really doesn't kick in...
Edit: Seems like Entocort releases from pH 5.5 upwards.
Budesonide has a high topical glucocorticosteroid (GCS) activity and a substantial first pass elimination. The formulation contains granules which are coated to protect dissolution in gastric juice, but which dissolve at pH greater than 5.5, ie, normally when the granules reach the duodenum. Thereafter, a matrix of ethylcellulose with budesonide controls the release of the drug into the intestinal lumen in a time-dependent manner. If it starts releasing as early as the duodenum, I wonder how much of it is actually left by the time it reaches the terminal ileum?
