A taper isn't necessary, no withdrawal symptoms for mesalamines. I quit lialda cold-turkey after a year on remicade per gastroenterologist recommendation.
I totally understand you wanting to be cautious, and thus the request for a gradual reduction, just in case. In fact, I insisted on a taper over my gastroenterologist's initial objection first for rowasa, (the next thing to get rid of), and second for 6mp. It's pretty scary to reduce medications after a horrible flare, as you know changing doses could buy you an express train ride to flaresville (somewhere in a dank, dark place in NJ, I hear). Now on just remicade for maintenance, my gastroenterologist was right and I now need only remicade. I don't regret being cautious though.
