One step surgery is not common and I would imagine people are most likely to suffer from complications with this type of procedure. There are people who have had it and were successful, so it's not impossible, but I think it all depends on finding a surgeon who does this procedure. The reality probably is, a one step wouldn't be an option for many people who NEED surgery. People who are in very sick status, end up with their intestines in a condition that is not all that pliable. The intestines need to reach to the pouch. Mine were not able to reach due to steroid use and weight gain from steroids. I was not a candidate for 2 step (though my surgeon prefers 3 step, so another doctor would have probably done 2 on me). In my opinion, coming out with a good outcome trumps doing it in less steps.
I do not have children, but i am a woman in my 30s on my own, so I can relate to being the breadwinner. If I stop earning, I stop being able to pay my bills. It's very stressful. I actually think I had best case scenario with my 3 step because I took one week off for surgery with each step and under a week to recover before returning to work (at home). I didn't end up having to use any type of disability and I didn't end up having to take any unpaid time.
It's very difficult to say how he will respond to surgery. It can be a very easy recovery or a very difficult one. Mine were easy. Some people have scar tissue and adhesions that eliminate the possibility of a laparoscopic surgery which makes recovery much harder - and there's no way to know until you're doing it.
The fastest possible way to get back to normal life is with an ileo. That's what you have between the steps - you have one step and an external pouch permanently, that is the easiest and least risky for immediate and future complications.
The only procedure that avoids an ostomy bag all together is the one step... You should really consult with some surgeons and see if you can find ones who do one steps and see if he's a candidate.
- Realistic recovery time definitely depends on the person. I think sex was 4-6 weeks after each step. No heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks. Exercise same time frame - of course, some people need much longer.
- I don't have kids so I can't tell you want to expect there.
- I was in the hospital for 2-5 days after each step
- One step - not very common. Permanent ileostomy is one step...
- Worst part was accepting that I needed to have surgery & having to use PTO time to have surgery.
- Best part is being done with UC.
- Nothing was really all that shocking. I guess the drain tubes that no one told me about. My temp ileo was horrible.
- I didn't really over-prepare - kind of took things one day at a time.
- I don't have family so it's tough to relate to people worrying about me. It would have been nice if I wasn't rushing to get back to work.
- Take it easy. Life will be much better once you get your health back
