Thank you! I do have a few questions about the appointment with the ostomy nurse before the actual surgery.
First, about how far in advance is the appointment?
When they determine the site, what do they use to mark it (concerned about showering and washing off the mark)?
When they are determining the site, do they use adhesives (DH has some hair [not Chewbacca-esque; I call it a "tasteful" amount 😱😂] and is worried about that being problematic)?
*PERSONAL QUESTION* For the *ahem* natural/untrimmed/unwaxed men and women out there, did you wax/shave/trim/whatever before your ostomy appointment and/or laparoscopic surgery?

Interestingly enough, I never had an appointment with an ostomy nurse. And at the time of my surgery I didn't know any better to ask because I wasn't online with these awesome support groups. At my consult, my surgeon showed me where the stoma would be placed. He put it in a good spot because I never had any issues with the location of it. But from reading here and there, I see it's common to meet with an ostomy nurse. Thinking back, I have no idea why I never met with one. And again, at the time I didn't even know to ask. I have so much more knowledge now after the fact!

I did make sure I was properly "waxed" because I knew they were making a c-section type incision at my bikini line for the lapo procedure. I'm sure it wasn't necessary.....they will shave what they need to. I just felt more comfortable taking care of it myself.

You may want to start another topic for these questions - the ostomy board may be a better place to ask. Only a handful of us know about ostomies here.

I had my appointment with the nurse a few days before surgery. She pushed on my belly and had me sit, stand and lay down, checked where the bend was. She marked both sides with what looked like a blue marker. It's likely the stoma will be on the right - but she marked both sides just in case. She covered the 2 markings with thin clear adhesive sheets. I showered and did everything normally with them on without a problem. I do not have much hair, but i've seen men on the ostomy board post about shaving around the stoma. I would imagine he will be shaved in surgery. They shaved where my incisions are.
