Generally the first line of treatment for ulcerative colitis is mesalamine/5ASA that's a prescription anti-inflammatory medication. You should take the maximum of 4,800 milligrams of an oral mesalamine (examples asacol, lialda, apriso, pentasa, or delzicol) and up to 4,000 milligrams of a rectal route medication (canasa suppository or rowasa/pentasa enema). There are patient copay assistance cards for many of those. Start there, if they don't work after a month then stronger medications like immunomodulators (Imuran, 6mp, or aza are tried). If those don't work then biologics like humira or remicade are tried. Generally, it's all tried in this order. You should be working with a gastroenterologist specialist.
If cost is a big concern then generics like sulfasalazine are available and equivalent to mesalamine.
Some have had luck with natural treatments but some have not. I believe the best approach is to do both. Why choose between them?
