I fill my wholes with spent mushroom soil which I buy in a bag, then put the plant in.
Last year was better, this year super hot and dry here in the east.
Watered every day, had ok crop used whoppers, got a quite a few 2 plus pounders, super steak not so good.
Also have had good luck with Cherokee purple, and big early.
Whopper plants still look good, just starting to make more fruit, might
get second crop if no frost in the next month or two.
Fried tomatoes with milk sauce are great, don't like fried green tomatoes.
Nothing like a fresh warm tomato with ham and cheese and mayo, sandwich.
Double thick slices.
