Hi NSSG,
I know you answered my tubal ligation post that you got Mirena after all your surgeries. I was just curious how long you have had it now and if you have noticed any hormonal issues? Like emotions, weight gain, acne, ect. I have my appt with my obgyn this week and although I'm still mostly wanting the tubal, I'm trying to prepare myself in case they think this surgery is not the best idea after just having 3 surgeries in the last 12 months.
Any other input of others with IUDs welcomed. Having 2 autoimmune diseases I feel very hesitant about
this but I can't continue the birth control pill due to my liver.

I haven't had acne really, which is big progress for me because my skin is very finicky in general, but I do get spotting. I have had PMS recently I'd say. I will have slight hormonal swings, and a light period or spotting, but not enough that it requires wearing any sort of product. I've had mild migraines, but nothing compared to what I got when I had a full period. I am coming up on a year with mine in December. Andrina did the copper and she said she had a very heavy period in the beginning. I am not sure how she's progressed, hopefully she responds with some feedback too. She's only had her for a few months I think. I was hoping I'd be a lucky one who didn't get a period at all. I know there is still time...

Thank you! Sounds like it is working pretty well for you. I think the copper one is out for me because when I was not on the pill I had heavy and painful periods so I fear that could be a long few months in the beginning or the whole time!
I feel like the Mirena people love it or hate it. I'm curious if you were on the pill before and had any issues with the hormones? All pills and the patch I tried made me a wreck. I'm on very low dose right now and that is the only that hasn't made me an emotional maniac. So I'm nervous I'll be one of the ones that feels like a crazy person on Mirena.

I have the mirena as well. Just got it in July. So a little over 3 months ago. I had rough reactions to all hormonal birth control. Pills and Nuva ring. Made me crazy mentally. I also had the copper iud but it gave me chronic yeast and bv issues (pre UC).
My period was sending my UC crazy so my GI suggested trying the mirena because of the lighter to no periods. I have had great luck with it. I'm still adjusting cycle wise but everything else is good. I'm really glad I got it. But I felt just like you did prior. I just said to myself if it causes issues I'll just take it out. Glad I tried!

I tried a few pills. I loved cerazette. It's no estrogen and very low dose, you take one each day, so no period. I would have kept taking it instead of getting the IUD but cerazette is difficult to get in the US - not FDA approved. It doesn't make sense actually since mircette and kariva are both similar but contain estrogen and they are higher dose. I would imagine there's no money in getting it approved so it will never happen. Since surgery, I don't see a reason to take a pill each day. I've been able to live med-free for quite a while now, I appreciate the ease of having an IUD.
I tried mircette, kariva, ortho tri-cyclin, yaz... I don't do well on estrogen. The week I am off I get horrid migraines.

Since you're not asking about
the copper IUD I guess my comment is useless. I just want to add that my period has gotten lighter. Only 4 days. Last period I didn't even need tampons or the night pad. I guess the heavy period thing is just to scare women off... haha I had them heavier on the Nuvaring for sure. I don't notice an IUD being there. It only cramps on my first days on my period and that's it. I love my heating pad <3
TotesMagotes, how long have you had the Mirena? What are bv issues? I had issues with yeast infection a couple years back and also UTI but so far I've been lucky I guess. I got my copper IUD in the beginning of August.

Andrina I do appreciate any input. That is good that you already have light periods. Did you have any heavy bleeding at first?

Hey Andrina- bv is bacterial vaginosis. My gyn said the copper just changed my ph down there and that's why I was having issues. It just didn't agree with my body. My periods started out heavier but then were pretty normal. I had the copper one in for 18 months.
I've had the mirena since July 6th so almost 4 months. My best friend has the copper and loves it. Whatever works right?!

I got an infection when changing partners and I do think it was a pH change although my gyn denies it
Yes my periods were heavier the first two times. When I got it in I was on my period and it was the heaviest but nothing I couldn't bear. The first day I had to take percocet after insertion and that's it.
TotesMagotes so you dealt with this the entire 18 months? That must have been difficult.

Saw my obgyn today. Well I knew what was coming, a simple tubal ligation is more risky on me because of my past surgeries and
location of my small bowel with no colon. She said if I absolutely wanted it she would try, but there was the risk of not being able to just go through my belly button and would have to
open me up. Which is not ideal for just a tubal.
So she wants me to try an IUD first. She said she wants to know my heptalogists opinion but suspects she will say no hormones so the copper IUD is my option.
The game plan is to try the copper IUD. At any point if I'm not happy with it she will schedule the surgery and do the tubal.
I wish I had a crystal ball so I would have known to get the tubal before my ileostomy!

@andrina- yeah pretty much. I had good times and bad times but i kept getting stuff and I finally called uncle. Lol. The mirena I'm having a little issue with spotting. My gyn says it's because my weight is too low but in the last 4 weeks I gained 4 lbs so we are hoping that finally balances things out. To be honest I don't mind the spotting because my period isn't effecting my UC. Lesser of two evils ya know. I know I'll get my cycle on track. Post partum hormones after my second baby have been brutal.
@cupcake- I'm sorry to hear the situation with your surgeries but try the copper. Go into it positive. I know a lot of people who love the copper. I'm sure you will do great. Just be patient as your body settles in :) much love.

Thanks andrina! After I see my heptologist next week and make my appointment for it I may have some questions! My GYN said most of her patients love it, fingers crossed!
