NeverSusie, that's very interesting. about a year before I developed UC I tested positive for lupus anticoagulant syndrome in two blood tests. Then in follow up tests I no longer tested positive for it, which I understand can happen--you can have the antibodies temporarily. I never gave it much thought after that, but your post, and the other posts on here makes me wonder if there isn't a stronger, unexamined link between IBD and blood clotting disorders... it could be a coincidence, it could be that we're subject to more blood tests so they're more likely to get picked up, it could be a clustering of AI conditions, or maybe there's even a causal connection. Just seems weird.

So, I am 72 and need knee replacement. 225s, I have Factor V Liden, had DVT blood clots I. 2008- rt leg, behind knee and in calf, 2nd in 2017 top of thigh in rt leg, not classified as DVT. Suppose to have knee surgery, but need doctors to tell surgeon I am OK for surgery.(hematologist, cardiologist, thyroid Dr and GP. ) However, although surgeon talked about staying longer in hospital because of possibility of blood clot, but he never said the words "spontaneous blood clot. " So, Now I am really worried about not surviving surgery.

Is there anyone out there that can give me their experience, please.

Hi moosie, sorry your'e going through this. Ive been through the wringer w/ blood clots and UC. I'd suggest an IVC filter for surgery, then have it removed. The new standards for these filters is to be removed within a month or so anyway because of all the issues long term.
This way you can have very good protection against clots without additional meds.

Moose, I hope the best for you. It is so scary to worry there is a bomb inside you that could detonate any time.
I didn’t have blood clot issues while struggling with UC, but after step one of j-pouch surgery, I had issues. I was on Lovenox for a month after surgery, but three months after surgery I developed a clot in my mesenteric vein. Luckily I caught it early and it was only a partial clot, but it really scared me. I knew blood clots were a risk with all the inflammation from UC, but I don’t think it hit home until then. I had a lot of testing, and I had no blood disorders. I was on Xarelto for three months, the clot resolved, and I just had step two surgery. Needless to say, I will take all the Lovenox they sent, but I’m still worrying about it a lot.
At least you know you’re at risk, so like beatUC said, hopefully you will have preventive measures they can take. Good luck!

You could ask your doctor about nattokinase and/or French maritime pine bark extract (aka pycnogenol). This link explains how it might reduce the risk of blood clots and DVT. But your doctor may have 2nd thoughts especially if you are on other meds such as blood thinners.

12
