Vancomycin for Liver

Hey all,
I was diagnosed with UC thirteen years ago and after going into remission I didn't have any problems until just this past year. After blood work and a biopsy my doc concluded I have fairly early PSC (primary sclerosing cholangitis). He'd done some research on studies at Stanford and decided to put me on Vancomycin to better or reverse the effects on my liver. I currently take two Lialda each day, but the dosage he's put me on for the Vancomycin is 1500mg a day, pretty much three times the recommended dose. Thank goodness its only for a month but even just easing into the amount is not fun on my digestive system (some mild abdominal pain, pretty bad diarrhea).
Has anyone else been through this sort of deal with the drug, experienced similar symptoms, even been on that dosage? Any info helps, thanks.

I also have early stage PSC, diagnosed last year. I'm currently on no medication for it. My doctor didn't want to do any medication yet because I am not symptomatic, however there have been some patients in the Stanford pediatric study that were put on vanco before symptoms started and it did reverse the early damage.

I do not know much on the doses used. I do know that there are several different brands of Vanco and some UC patients respond better or have less issues with different brands.

Are you on Facebook? There is a pSC Partners support group ( it's closed so only members see your posts) that are on Vanco. Mostly pediatric. There are some adults and they are great about answering questions and sharing their experience.

If you are not on FB I would be glad to ask them your dosing question or any others you have.

I went back and looked at a couple of the previous posts on Vanco and not many listed their dose but one woman's daughter who is on Vanco for PSC and UC is on 2000 mg a day.

I've only taken vanco for c diff at a much lower dose. Best of luck to you.
